Book Description
This is a collection of seventeen selected papers from the Third International Congress of the Society of Oriental Liturgy, held in Volos, Greece, in 2010. The Society is a non-confessional association of scholars dealing with the liturgical traditions (and related disciplines) of the Eastern Christian Churches. These papers reflect studies on the Ethiopian, Georgian, Hagiopolite, Greek, Bulgarian, Slavonic, early Patristic, East Syriac, and West Syriac liturgies across a wide range of countries and cultures. Among other topics, the authors study the texts of liturgical services (including the critical question of translations), archaeology, liturgical music, iconography, mystagogical commentary, and liturgical theology. The papers deal with both the historical practice of the Churches and their present-day usages. The authors examine not only what has been the liturgical usage of the Eastern Churches in their countries of origin, but also how these liturgies are adapted and celebrated in the diaspora.

The Eucharistic Liturgies

The Eucharistic Liturgies PDF Author: Paul F. Bradshaw
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814662668
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description
In graduate theology programs across the United States and elsewhere, Maxwell Johnson's The Rites of Christian Initiation: Their Evolution and Interpretation has become a standard text. Now Johnson and Paul Bradshaw together offer a companion volume on the historical development of the liturgy and theology of the Eucharist. Like the earlier volume, this study proceeds historically, from the origins of the Eucharist up to our own day. Unlike most studies of this kind, it includes an introduction to and developmental summary of the diverse eucharistic liturgies of the Christian East. It also explores the various Western rites (Ambrosian, Gallican, and Mozarabic) in addition to the Roman. With regard to theological themes, the authors give special attention to the topics of real presence (including the "consecration" of the bread and wine) and eucharistic sacrifice, the most central and most ecumenically challenging issues since the sixteenth-century Reformations. Making the book especially teacher- and student-friendly are the summary points at the end of each chapter. Each chapter also contains an abundance of liturgical texts for ease of reference.

Category : Eastern churches

Book Description
This volume contains sixteen papers on Eastern Christian liturgies: on their origins, historical developments, current practices, and their theologies. The subjects range from initiation in Syriac Christianity to the origins of the feast of the Ark of the Covenant, and to the Book of Hours of Armenia and Jerusalem; from Coptic liturgy to an ancient Ethiopian catechesis with liturgical comments, and to the Palestinian Typicon; from Byzantine vesting rituals to the rite of marriage in the South-Slavic tradition, and to the fifteenth-century Archbishop Symeon of Thessalonica; from present-day Romanian liturgy 'between Greeks and Slavs' to Catholic veneration of Russian saints, and to the American Orthodox monastery of New Skete; and from the interactive web 2.0 to Robert Taft looking back on his impressive academic career. Thus the Society of Oriental Liturgy, dedicated to inquiries into the manifold worship traditions of the Eastern Churches, once more demonstrates that its research is an attractive cornucopia.

Handbook for Liturgical Studies, Volume V

Handbook for Liturgical Studies, Volume V PDF Author: Anscar J. Chupungco
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814662900
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 682

Book Description
The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studies series, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Space contains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West. The second is the Liturgical Year, traditionally called the anni circulas. The development of the Liturgical Year during the first four centuries is reviewed. This is followed by adetaled study of the Byzantine, Roman, and non-Roman Western tradition. It concludes with the theology and spirituality of the Liturgical Year wherein the mystery of Christ as a saving event is made present in time, so that the faithful may lay hold of it through the Word and the sacraments. The theology of liturgical space is drawn from the mutual interaction between the assembled community, which gives meaning to the place of assembly, and the place itself, which upholds and signifies community. Category : History

Book Description
The history of the Eastern liturgical rituals reveals the variety and splendour of the world of the Christian Orient, and the profundity of its theological thought. The ritual bears witness to the deep impact these liturgies made on the Mediterranean cultures and societies of Late Antiquity. Gabriele Winkler, a specialist in Oriental liturgies and Armenian studies, here explores the beginnings and early development of these rituals in their historical, philological, and doctrinal context. Her work elucidates the interdependence of the Syriac, Greek, and Armenian cultures; it also demonstrates the interest of this material for the religious and political history of the era.

Book Description
"Certain 'old books' simply are indispensable because, in site of their age, they have never been replaced. F. E. Brightman, Liturgies Eastern and Western: I. Eastern Liturgies (London 1896) - the second part of which never appeared - definitely is such a book. In one volume it brings together, in Greek or in English translation, the main types of the Eucharistic liturgy of the various Eastern Christian Churches. For more than a century now, it has served as a reference work to students and scholars in comparative liturgy and has been quoted thousands of times in publications, classes, and research projects. Due to the wide range of its materials, it will undoubtedly remain a most valuable tool for many years to come. Students and scholars in the field of liturgy need, and will need, to have this volume at their disposal. Gorgias Press' reprint, therefore, should be warmly welcomed!" - Dr. Ugo Zanetti
