Distribution and Biodiversity of Singapore Gorgonians (sub-class Octocorallia) - a Preliminary Survey

Distribution and Biodiversity of Singapore Gorgonians (sub-class Octocorallia) - a Preliminary Survey PDF Author: Nigel K. C. Goh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 19

Book Description
Preliminary surveys of the gorgonian fauna of Singapore show the existence of 6 families, comprising at least 9 genera and 18 species. Studies show that the distribution of this fauna is closely related to the availability of a suitable substrate for settlement and growth. In addition, the greatest number of gorgonians, in terms of abundance and species richness, is found on the lower slopes and bottoms of the reefs in Singapore. Diversity and equitbility values for Singapore reefs indicate a temporally predictable but stressful environment. [Authors' abstract].

Marine and Freshwater Toxins

Marine and Freshwater Toxins PDF Author: P. Gopalakrishnakone
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789400764187
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In recent years, the field of Toxinology has expanded substantially. On the one hand it studies venomous animals, plants and micro organisms in detail to understand their mode of action on targets. While on the other, it explores the biochemical composition, genomics and proteomics of toxins and venoms to understand their three interaction with life forms (especially humans), development of antidotes and exploring their pharmacological potential. Therefore, Toxinology has deep linkages with biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy and pharmacology. In addition, there is a fast developing applied subfield, clinical toxinology, which deals with understanding and managing medical effects of toxins on human body. Given the huge impact of toxin-based deaths globally, and the potential of venom in generation of drugs for so-far incurable diseases (for example, Diabetes, Chronic Pain), the continued research and growth of the field is imminent. This has led to the growth of research in the area and the consequent scholarly output by way of publications in journals and books. Despite this ever growing body of literature within biomedical sciences, there is still no all-inclusive reference work available that collects all of the important biochemical, biomedical and clinical insights relating to Toxinology. The Handbook of Toxinology aims to address this gap and cover the field of Toxinology comprehensively.

Biology and Ecology of Venomous Marine Cnidarians

Biology and Ecology of Venomous Marine Cnidarians PDF Author: Ramasamy Santhanam
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811516030
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
Seas and oceans cover 71 % of the earth’s surface and they are home to 80% of all life found on the planet . Among the different components of marine life, the phylum Cnidaria (formerly Coelenterata) has been reported to be responsible for more envenomations than any other marine phylum. It is believed that 2% of its known 11000 species are venomous to humans. Incidents caused by jellyfish are common all around the globe, with serious manifestations and occasional deaths reported in some countries. The Australian box jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri , has been reported to be very dangerous to humans, as contact with its tentacles can provoke immediate cardiovascular collapse and death within minutes. Though other volumes on venomous marine fauna are available, this is the first comprehensive book focusing on venomous marine cnidarians. It is a valuable text-cum-reference resource for researchers, teachers and students of various disciplines, including fisheries science, marine biotechnology and marine biology and for university and college libraries. It is also a useful guide for beachgoers, divers, physicians and environmentalists.
