Rapid and Nondestructive Detection Techniques for Agri-Product Quality

Rapid and Nondestructive Detection Techniques for Agri-Product Quality PDF Author: Te Ma
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832553133
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Agri-product such as grains, fruits and vegetables play a very important role in people's daily life. The agri-product quality directly affects human life and health. Agri-product quality refers to the quality characteristics acceptable to consumers, which mainly includes external factors such as size, shape, color, defect and texture, and internal factors such as physical properties, chemical composition and tissue diseases. Generally speaking, variety, climate, soil, cultivation techniques, diseases and pests are all factors that affect the agri-product quality. Traditional methods for agri-product quality evaluation are time-consuming, complex, and expensive. With the continuous development of modern science and technology, rapid and nondestructive detection technologies are applied to evaluate the quality of agri-product. These technologies could obtain the optical, acoustics and electrical properties of a specific substance and then reveal the appearance and internal quality of the agri-product. Furthermore, the trend today is that consumers have become more exigent for information about the products they purchase, which makes the nondestructive detection technology has more important application value in the field of agri-product quality evaluation.

Spectroscopy of Tropical Fruits: Sala Mango and B10 Carambola (Penerbit USM)

Spectroscopy of Tropical Fruits: Sala Mango and B10 Carambola (Penerbit USM) PDF Author: Ommi Kalsom Mardziah Yahaya

Book Description
This research work plays an important role in transforming current conventional methodology in fruit quality definition and evaluation into scientific and technological objectives and implementation. Conventional definition in evaluating fruit quality is based on its physical attributes such as colour, size, shape and percentage of physical defects. While the conventional practice is dominating fruit industry, the efforts to transform this conventional definition towards a more valuable and scientific interpretation has been put forth by various research groups worldwide. For every presented variable, evaluating or quantifying methodologies will be introduced and promoted by scientific societies. Similarly to fruit quality evaluation, several methodologies have been introduced, based on its physical or intrinsic definition. Despite many efforts that have been carried out in this research area, gaps still exist for the new research to take place especially in the area related to development of low cost measuring system, miniature and mobile system, online monitoring system with rapid time of measurement and high accuracy and precision measurement algorithm. Hence, this book is written particularly to explore the ability of visible and near infrared spectroscopy in quantitatively determining fruit intrinsic qualities with in-depth case studies on two prominent tropical fruits, Sala mango and B10 carambola.

Nondestructive Quality Assessment Techniques for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Nondestructive Quality Assessment Techniques for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables PDF Author: Pankaj B. Pathare
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811954224
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
This book describes the various techniques for nondestructive quality assessment of fruits and vegetables. It covers the methods, measurements, operation principles, procedures, data analysis, and applications for implementing these techniques. The book presents the details of nondestructive approaches focusing on the present-day trends and existing future opportunities in the fresh food supply chain. First, it overviews different nondestructive techniques in food quality detection. Then it presents nondestructive methods: monochrome computer vision, imaging techniques, biospeckle laser technique, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, Raman spectroscopy, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, X-ray computed tomography, ultrasound, acoustic emission, chemometrics, electronic nose and tongue. Selected applications of each method are also introduced. As a result, readers gain a better understanding of how to use nondestructive methods and technologies to detect the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables. With a wide range of interesting topics, the book will benefit readers including postharvest & food scientists/technologists, industry personnel and researchers involved in fresh produce quality detection. The book can also serve as a readily accessible reference material for postgraduate students.

Suitability of portable NIR sensors (food-scanners) for the determination of fruit quality along the supply chain using the example of tomatoes (Band 50)

Suitability of portable NIR sensors (food-scanners) for the determination of fruit quality along the supply chain using the example of tomatoes (Band 50) PDF Author: Simon Goisser

Book Description
Food-scanners are novel, portable and miniaturized devices, which operate on the principle of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). According to the manufacturers, these devices are suitable for measuring a wide range of important quality parameters on fresh produce. This research evaluated the suitability of food-scanners for determining fruit quality along the supply chain of fruit and vegetables. Using the qualitative research approach, the first step of this research comprised interviews of experts at different positions along the fresh produce value chain in Germany. Thereby, preferences and concerns regarding the utilization and implementation of this technology for fresh produce were investigated. Based on these findings, non-destructive prediction models for various important quality characteristics and secondary plant constituents were developed using the model fruit tomato. In addition, food-scanner predictions of relevant quality traits on a wide range of produce from the fruit and vegetable assortment were examined. The evaluations showed a high degree of conformity between the results of non-destructive food-scanner predictions and conventional destructive measurement methods. The results illustrate the great potential of these novel devices for the application in everyday practice of fruit quality control along the fresh produce supply chain.
