Book Description
Excerpt from A Guide-Book to the Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Browning needs no helps in making his meanings clearto his readers, but for those who have found it diļ¬‚icult to read him, and for those who have not a library at hand for the explanation of his allusions. In its preparation the work of others has been drawn upon freely. The Papers of the London Browning Society have been the chief source of in formation. The great amount oi interesting matter con tained in the twelve numbers now issued of those Papers has been carefully studied but it is in a form very incoa venient for reference. In this volume much of it will be found under the titles of the poems to which it refers. Mrs. Orr's valuable Handbook to Robert Browning's Works has been used to a considerable extent, because it contains much information supplied directly by Browning for the elucidar tion of his poems. In every instance where such informa tion was necessary to the purpose of the present volume it has been used, credit being given wherever possible. An other valuable source of information has been the magazine called poet-lore, which has given special attention to the interpretation of Browning's poems, and to awaking an in terest in his poetry. For the aid of the student of Brown ing who may wish to consult the books and essays referred to throughout this volume, and also the best things written of the poet, there have been added to this preface a number of brief reference lists. Very much not contained in any of the books devoted to Browning and his poetry will be found in these pages, arranged systematically and in a form con venient for reference. The book will be found to contain the following kinds of information about Browning and his works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the Poetry of Robert Browning These Studies were published some years ago, and soon went through two editions. For various reasons they were not reissued at that time. They are issued now because many inquiries for them, since they went out of print, and other considerations, seem to show that there is still room for them in the literature of their subject. The book has been carefully revised, in many parts rewritten, three chapters are new, five others largely so, and many additions have been made, with the view of making it more complete within its plan as a study/of Browning's work. More space has been allowed me than in the former editions, and I have been glad to avail myself of it, though the longer and more important of the later poems are still excluded. In "The Ring and the Book," the "Dramatic Idyls," "Fifine," "Ferishtah," and some others of these later poems there is matter for a further group of studies. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Poetry of Robert Browning That it may not be supposed that obligations to various introductions to Browning now existing in book form, have been overlooked, it may be well to state that the present work was (with the exception of one or two statements of fact) already completed in manuscript, as it now stands, in September, 1886, before, as far as the author is aware, any of these books, except that of Mrs. Sutherland Orr, had appeared. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Robert Browning's Poetry The study of poetry, in our institutions of learning, so far as I have taken note of it, and the education induced thereby, are almost purely intellectual. The student's spiritual nature is left to take care of itself and the consequence is that he becomes, at best, only a thinking and analyzing machine. The spiritual claims of the study of poetry are especially demanded in the case of Browning's poetry. Browning is gen erally and truly regarded as the most intellectual of poets. No poetry in English literature, or in any literature, is more charged with discursive thought than his. But he is, at the same time, the most spiritual and transcendental of poets, the subtlest assertor of the Soul in Song. His thought is never an end to itself, but is always subservient to an ulterior spiritual end always directed towards a presentment of the correspond ency of the universe to Deity, of the natural to the spirit ual, and of the actual to the ideal and it is all-important that students should be awakened, and made, as far as possi ble, responsive to this spiritual end. The sections of the Introduction on Personality and Art were read before the Browning Society of London, in June, 1882. I have seen no reason for changing or modifying, in any respect, the views therein expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Browning Studies These Browning Studies were given in Oberlin College, in the Department of English in the course on Nineteenth Century Poetry, in the second semester of the year 1908-09, and were repeated in the corresponding semester of the year1909-10. They constituted a course in the Summer Session of Middlebury College in 1913, and were given here again as a part of the study of Nineteenth Century Poetry in the second semester of the year 1913-14. It should be explained also that the greater part of the study of The Ring and the Book was written before those Oberlin days, and that since those days Bishop Blougram's Apology, A Death in the Desert, and Reverie have been added to the list of poems taken up; also that, besides being used in connection with the college classes mentioned above, several of the lectures have been given in various places. The interest taken by the students in these studies has suggested their publication. They are now printed as given in the classroom, with some revision. Abbreviations are written out more than in the author's notes, but no attempt has been made to reproduce the extemporaneous elaboration and explanation given in the classroom. Lectures which occupied several classroom hours are here sometimes combined into a single chapter. These studies do not pretend to be exhaustive. They are simply an introduction to some of Browning's best work. They are intended now, as they were in the classroom, for those who have not read Browning at all before, or very little.
