Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Without denying the high merits of Hegel's work, it is clear to us that it has also grave defects. In his reaction against Schleiermacher and the Romantic School, Hegel ignores the great import ance of feeling in the religious consciousness. If the feeling of dependence were the essence of religion, then, he remarks scornfully, the dog would be the most religious of creatures. The animal, we are told, feels, but it is the characteristic of man to think. True, but man also feels, and he does not feel as the animal feels. It is safe to say that if man were a purely thinking being, he would not be the religious being that experience shows him to be. Occupying the standpoint of an all-embracing idealism, Hegel gives no adequate psychological analysis of the religious consciousness. He does not treat of faith in its specific character; and though he indicates the dialectic movement by which feeling passes into representation, he fails to recognise how essential the interplay of sentiment, emotion, and idea is in the maturest spiritual experience. Foundations of Christian Belief

Foundations of Christian Belief PDF Author: Francis L. Strickl

Book Description
Excerpt from Foundations of Christian Belief: Studies in the Philosophy of Religion It will be seen at once that the scope of religion and the complexity Of the problems it presents make its treatment by a philosophical method far from simple, for in the systematic study of the religious life we are not dealing with forces which are constant and invariable like those, for instance, dealt with in physics. We are dealing, rather, with phases of life as they manifest themselves in those variables named human belief, emotion and will. In other words, we deal with life on the plane Of the personal. This makes a philosophy Of religion particularly difficult. It also makes it all the more important that we develop a proper method, a method which will recog nize constantly that when we deal with religion we are dealing with personal life, and with a great factor in human history which has always stood in the closest relation to the practical concerns of life. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Theology The essays which follow are, as the title denotes, studies, which, from time to time, during the years of professional life, have engaged the writers attention, and occupied his most thoughtful hours. Many of them have been already published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, and elsewhere. The themes discussed are how ever, for the most part, of permanent interest; and as such, the discussions have a value as contributions to philosophical and theological science. For the con venience of many, especially my former pupils in Col lege and Seminary, these essays are now gathered into a volume, with such notes as seemed to be required. The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History (Classic Reprint)

The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Otto Pfleiderer
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History The question of the origin of religion, and of the nature of primitive religion, was not, as a rule, seriously taken up by the early philosophy of religion, nor made the subject of any thorough investi gation; in recent times, however, it has come to the front, and has become one of the burning questions of religious science. And this is as it should be. For the nature of a mental phenomenon such as religion, is only unfolded in the totality of its development in history, and can only be understood as a whole when its origin has been traced, and its springs laid bare. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Hegel's Philosophy of Religion: With a Chapter on Christian Unity in America Dr. W. T. Harris, the profoundest student of Hegel in this country, says that no other work more deserves translation into English. But any mere translation of it would need a further trans lation into expository paraphrase. The inadequacy of such a translation may be tested by the reader in the first few pages of Chapter VIII. Book Description
Excerpt from Science, Philosophy and Religion: Lectures Delivered Before the Lowell Institute, Boston The plan of the lectures and their merit, whatever this may be, centre here, and are commended to un sparing, yet fair and searching, criticism. If these. Lectures shall serve, even by a little, to deepen our impression of our powers, and our sense of hope in their handling, a chief object will be reached. We believe in the unspeakable elevation of our spiritual nature, and are willing often to Shift the View, if so be, through clouds and mists, we may catch some more distinct prospect Of those heights on which it is our earliest and latest effort to plant the feet Of men.
