Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Recent Aesthetic The chapter entitled Tendencies and Prob lems is my one effort after explicit systematic wholeness. It is a survey of the aesthetic methods in vogue in England and America at the present time. The paper on Bergson's theory of comedy has the most subjective motive of any of the studies. I have long been interested in theories of wit and humor, and Bergson makes out such a clear case for such a wrong conception that he is convenient to start from. The Hellenistic Aesthetic

The Hellenistic Aesthetic PDF Author: Barbara Hughes Fowler
Publisher: Univ of Wisconsin Press
ISBN: 9780299120443
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
"Fowler's . . . own insights are apparent throughout, and they seem to distill the personal appreciation and understanding of a scholar who has devoted much of her career to both contemplating and enjoying Hellenistic poetry. . . . [This book] would make an excellent background text for courses in later Greek and Roman art, and it can be read with profit by anyone interested in exploring the character of Hellenistic culture."--J. J. Pollitt, American Journal of Archaeology "Outstanding is the range of examples discussed both in poetry and art. Theocritus, Callimachus, Appolonius, the epigrammatists, and others--that is, the major figures of the time--are considered at length and in several different contexts. Passages are quoted in the original Greek, translated, and analyzed. Fowler's sensitivity to poetic forms, evident in her other published writings, is again evident here. In addition, however, the philosophical context is not overlooked. . . . Also highly commendable are the liberal references to works of art. Sculpture in the round and in relief, portraits, terracotta figurines, original paintings (grave stelai) and Campanian murals, mosaics, gold and silver vessels, and jewelry are introduced at various points. Every work of art discussed is illustrated in astonishingly clear photographs, which are interspersed in the body of the text."--Christine Mitchell Havelock "The Hellenistic Aesthetic provides classicists with their first thorough discussion of the aesthetic unity found in Hellenistic art and literature. . . . Fowler examines parallels both in subject matter and in artistic approach among a diverse group of literary genres and artistic forms. In twelve chapters, The Hellenistic Aesthetic surveys Alexandrian epigrams, pastorals, epics, sculptural groups, mosaics, paintings, and jewelry to supply a convincing, and frequently unexpected, picture of a unified aesthetic vision."--Jeffrey Buller, Classical Outlook

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Aesthetic It would have been foolish, I thought, to omit the more obvious points of the mediaeval development, both in art and in opinion, the mere mention of which might be suggestive to my readers, simply because I had to take them from such writers as Prof. Adamson, Prof. Seth, Prof. Middleton, Mr. Morris and Mr. Pater, and not from original research. Some division of labour must be allowed, though the fact that it has been resorted to should always be made known. Book Description
Excerpt from Beauty Ugliness: And Other Studies in Psychological AEsthetics Dealing with my previous volume, Laura; nobilij, the most intelligent of my critics complained that I took our aesthetic preferences for granted, Without explaining their nature or even proving their exist ence. If that rash reviewer really thirsts for psychological aesthetics, he may find some temporary refreshment in the present volume, Which contains as much of the How and W by of Beauty and Ugliness as I have been able to squeeze out of some rather dry books and out of fifteen years of my own and my fellow-worker's observations. If he, or any other inquisitive person, should then remain With unslaked curiosity about asthetics, he must go to the Psycho logical Laboratories of Germany and America, Where he may, in return for further knowledge, be used up as an experimental subject. Book Description
Excerpt from The Development of Taste, and Other Studies in Aesthetics IT is nearly twenty years now since I received my first stimulus to Studies in Aesthetics, and it was received from lectures given, and essays prescribed, by Professor Edward Caird, of Glasgow University, in session 1866-67. Early in the session we had as subject of essay, The Relations of religion, art, and Philosophy, and later, in connection with the philosophy of Plato, The Place of Art in Education. These led me in the following summer to write more carefully, and after a good deal of reading, on The Power of Art in Educa tion and from that time forward the subject of Beauty has been always one of interest to me, and for years one of much thought. The time that has elapsed since my first interest in the subject will explain my references to works of such a miscellaneous character; for, while not always writing on the subject, I have always been taking note of anything that bore on it in the course of my reading. Book Description
Excerpt from The Creative Will: Studies in the Philosophy and the Syntax of AEsthetics Natural and zesthetio stimuli. - Art, which is merely an external stimulus, can be com municated to the brain only through the senses. It differs from other stimuli only in degree of perfection - that is, it has been arranged in such a manner that it produces a complete and satis fying reaction. But the inward activity of art, through the sense media, follows the same physi cal laws as does a natural stimulus. Only in the completeness of the impression does it distinguish itself from other stimuli. Once this fact is real ised, the determining of msthetic reactions will cease to be looked upon as an impossibility. The Sense of Beauty

The Sense of Beauty PDF Author: George Santayana
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781528284219
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outlines of AEsthetic Theory This little work contains the chief ideas gathered together for a course of lectures on the theory and history of aesthetics given at Harvard College from 1892 to 1895. The only originality I can claim is that which may result from the attempt to put to gether the scattered commonplaces of criticism into a system, under the inspiration of a naturalistic psychology. I have studied sincerity rather than novelty, and if any subject, as for instance the excellence of tragedy, is presented in a new light, the change consists only in the stricter application to a complex subject of the principles acknowledged to obtain in our simple judgments. My effort throughout has been to recall those fundamental aesthetic feelings the orderly extension of which yields sanity of judgment and distinction of taste. The influences under which the book has been written are rather too general and pervasive to admit of specification; yet the student of philosophy will not fail to perceive how much I owe to writers, both living and dead, to whom no honour could be added by my acknowledgments. I have usually omitted any reference to them in foot-notes or in the text, in order that the air of controversy might be avoided, and the reader might be enabled to compare what is said more directly with the reality of his own experience. Early Modern Aesthetics

Early Modern Aesthetics PDF Author: J. Colin McQuillan
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1783482133
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Early Modern Aesthetics is a concise and accessible guide to the history of aesthetics in the early modern period. J. Colin McQuillan shows how philosophers concerned with art and beauty positioned themselves with respect to the ancients and the moderns, how they thought the arts were to be distinguished and classified, the principles they proposed for art and literary criticism, and how they made aesthetics a part of philosophy in the eighteenth century. The book explores the controversies that arose among philosophers with different views on these issues, their relation to the philosophy, science, and art, and their legacy for contemporary aesthetics.
