Transformations of Retailing in Europe after 1945

Transformations of Retailing in Europe after 1945 PDF Author: Lydia Langer
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317007786
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
After World War II, structures, practices and the culture of retailing in most West European countries went through a period of rapid change. The post-war economic boom, the emergence of a mass consumer society, and the adaptation of innovations which already had been implemented in the USA during the interwar period, revolutionized the world of getting and spending. But the implementation of self-service and the supermarket, the spread of the department store and the mail order business were not only elements of a transatlantic catch up process of 'Americanization' of retailing. National patterns of the retail trade and specific cultures of consumption remained crucial, and long term processes of change, starting in the 1920s or 1930s, also had an impact on the transformation of retailing in post-war Europe. This volume presents a series of case-studies looking at transformations of retailing in several European countries, offering new insights into the structural preconditions of the emerging mass consumer societies and also into the consequences consumerism had on the practices of retailing.

Retailing in the European Union

Retailing in the European Union PDF Author: Stewart Howe
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134517262
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
As retailing becomes increasingly important in global economics, the similarities and differences of retailing from country to country are now more evident. This unique and timely study of retail structures across Europe, gives an insightful overview of the internationalization of retailing and asks important questions regarding the effectiveness of different retailing sectors. With chapters on Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, this contemporary study examines the extent to which Europe's increasingly homogenous environment applies to retailing. By considering overall structural and socio-economic variables of country-to-country retailing, it draws fascinating conclusions on efficiency and competition within the European Union. A major contribution to the field of European retail studies, this significant work in comparative legislation is essential reading for anyone studying retailing at postgraduate or undergraduate level or with an interest in comparative economics.

Structural Changes and Global Trends in European Union Trade

Structural Changes and Global Trends in European Union Trade PDF Author: Ishak Mešić
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783847342427

Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
The study aims at researching and presenting structural changes and global trends in distributive trade of European Union, resulted from liberalization of economic activities within the EU. During the last decades, EU trade went through deep transformation and structural changes. Level of development, structure of trade network, as well as structure of retail forms, differ from one country to another. Regardless of differences between particular national and regional markets within EU, almost all countries participate in increased trend of internationalization, concentration and dislocation of traditional retail towards modern sale forms. On a global scale, internationalization of trade should lead to more integrated and uniform development of a whole world trade. First study deals with: the level of development and structure of the distributive trades in European union, and then processes the global trends (the changing in the trade structure of European union, increase of the share of retail with own brand, the concentration of the trade, the internationalization of retail trade).
