ISBN: 9780321977069
Category : Differential equations
Languages : en
Pages : 720
Book Description
For one-semester sophomore- or junior-level courses in Differential Equations. An introduction to the basic theory and applications of differential equations Fundamentals of Differential Equations presents the basic theory of differential equations and offers a variety of modern applications in science and engineering. This flexible text allows instructors to adapt to various course emphases (theory, methodology, applications, and numerical methods) and to use commercially available computer software. For the first time, MyLab(TM) Math is available for this text, providing online homework with immediate feedback, the complete eText, and more. Note that a longer version of this text, entitled Fundamentals of Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 7th Edition , contains enough material for a two-semester course. This longer text consists of the main text plus three additional chapters (Eigenvalue Problems and Sturm--Liouville Equations; Stability of Autonomous Systems; and Existence and Uniqueness Theory). Also available with MyLab Math MyLab(TM) Math is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students practice what they learn, test their understanding, and pursue a personalized study plan that helps them absorb course material and understand difficult concepts. Note: You are purchasing a standalone product; MyLab does not come packaged with this content. Students, if interested in purchasing this title with MyLab, ask your instructor for the correct package ISBN and Course ID. Instructors, contact your Pearson representative for more information. Smoothings of Piecewise Linear Manifolds
Author: Morris W. Hirsch
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 9780691081458
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
The intention of the authors is to examine the relationship between piecewise linear structure and differential structure: a relationship, they assert, that can be understood as a homotopy obstruction theory, and, hence, can be studied by using the traditional techniques of algebraic topology. Thus the book attacks the problem of existence and classification (up to isotopy) of differential structures compatible with a given combinatorial structure on a manifold. The problem is completely "solved" in the sense that it is reduced to standard problems of algebraic topology. The first part of the book is purely geometrical; it proves that every smoothing of the product of a manifold M and an interval is derived from an essentially unique smoothing of M. In the second part this result is used to translate the classification of smoothings into the problem of putting a linear structure on the tangent microbundle of M. This in turn is converted to the homotopy problem of classifying maps from M into a certain space PL/O. The set of equivalence classes of smoothings on M is given a natural abelian group structure.

Differential Equations with Maple V®
Author: Martha L Abell
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483266575
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 703
Book Description
Differential Equations with Maple V provides an introduction and discussion of topics typically covered in an undergraduate course in ordinary differential equations as well as some supplementary topics such as Laplace transforms, Fourier series, and partial differential equations. It also illustrates how Maple V is used to enhance the study of differential equations not only by eliminating the computational difficulties, but also by overcoming the visual limitations associated with the solutions of differential equations. The book contains chapters that present differential equations and illustrate how Maple V can be used to solve some typical problems. The text covers topics on differential equations such as first-order ordinary differential equations, higher order differential equations, power series solutions of ordinary differential equations, the Laplace Transform, systems of ordinary differential equations, and Fourier Series and applications to partial differential equations. Applications of these topics are also provided. Engineers, computer scientists, physical scientists, mathematicians, business professionals, and students will find the book useful.

Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Incorporating an innovative modeling approach, this book for a one-semester differential equations course emphasizes conceptual understanding to help users relate information taught in the classroom to real-world experiences. Certain models reappear throughout the book as running themes to synthesize different concepts from multiple angles, and a dynamical systems focus emphasizes predicting the long-term behavior of these recurring models. Users will discover how to identify and harness the mathematics they will use in their careers, and apply it effectively outside the classroom.
