With increased interest in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), teachers have worked to find ways in which SEL can be brought into the school and classroom community. For this study, the researcher wanted to bring SEL into the classroom and understand how the students perceived it. The study was conducted in an on-level senior Economics classroom where SEL had not previously been introduced into the classroom culture. Data was gathered through a student survey, individual student interviews, and a focus group interview. To analyze the data, the researcher used a constant comparative method of coding to identify the data thematically. From the data analysis, three major themes emerged: the importance of class climate, the powerfulness of student self-refection, and the importance of compassion and community to learners.

This study examined how senior English students in an academic classroom perceived a social emotional learning curriculum called CharacterStrong. The researcher taught weekly CharacterStrong social emotional lessons focused on community building and interpersonal relationships between educators and students and among peers. She collected data through surveys, headnotes, and individual student interviews. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method to look for recurring themes. The researcher found the participants felt that the sharing prompted by CharacterStrong intervention resulted in higher engagement and a more cohesive classroom community. Even so, the researcher found that students had identified a lack of depth in CharacterStrong units that prevented them from having all social and emotional needs met.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the outbreak forced schools to close their doors and quickly develop a virtual learning platform where students would be learning virtually in their homes. Social-emotional learning (SEL) has always been important but it has been emphasized even more so throughout the pandemic. This quantitative study investigated the differences among student SEL, measured by Panorama Education's SEL student perception data from students in grades 3-12 and the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher examined the data from Fall 2019, Fall 2020, and Fall 2021 to reflect differences in students' SEL prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and during the pandemic. The researcher also examined the differences among student SEL results related to grade level during Fall 2019, Fall 2020, and Fall 2021.

Continuous improvement is about learning from mistakes and experiences to improve in the future. However, students' perceptions of how continuous improvement practices affect their social and emotional skills have not been considered. The literature that exists neglects to include the perception of elementary students' social and emotional skills within this systematic approach to school improvement. Given this gap of research, this study examines the research questions: How do students perceive their social and emotional skills in a classroom learning community model? To what extent does the implementation of the components of the classroom learning community have an impact on the social and emotional skills of the students? The research and information illustrated in this qualitative intrinsic action research case study will provide a greater understanding of how continuous improvement practices increase the quality of an education system, specifically within the classroom environment. I conducted a survey of students' perception of social and emotional skills, semi-structured interviews, observations of classroom meetings, and collected documents from students in second and third grade as well as the classroom data centers, then employed inductive and deductive processes to analyze the data into themes which resulted in my findings from the study. Results of this study showed that most students perceive their social and emotional skills as average. The classroom learning community components that had the greatest impact on students were the student data binders that included individual SMART goals and the classroom meetings which provided every student a voice in the classroom. This study is important to understand how continuous improvement practices affect students and how these practices can be modified to provide an even greater impact on students' lifelong learning.

The purpose of this action research study was to implement and analyze an intervention designed to improve perceptions of working with others as well as practice and improve emotional tools related to such interactions through the systematic development of ability emotional intelligence (EI) related skills. The present study sought to: (1) explore high school students' perceptions of their role as part of a team during teamwork; (1a) investigate how perceptions differed by EI level; (2) examine how students' perceptions of their role in teamwork were influenced by being paired with more advanced (ability EI) peers or less advanced peers, based on ability emotional intelligence test scores; (3) determine if ability emotional intelligence related skills could be developed over the course of a 7-week intervention. The intervention took place in a 12th grade US Government & Economics classroom with 34 participants for examination of general trends, and 11 focal participants for focused and in-depth analysis. Students were taught about emotion theory and engaged in two weeks of ability emotional intelligence skills training, followed by a five-week project cycle in which students were required to work together to achieve a common goal. The research design was mixed methods convergent parallel. Quantitative data were collected from post- and retrospective pre-intervention surveys regarding student perceptions about working with others and their ability EI related skills. Qualitative data were collected through on-going student reflective journal entries, observational field notes, and interviews with the focal group of participants. Results suggested the intervention had a significant effect on students' perceptions of working with others and perceived ability emotional intelligence related skills. Significant positive change was found through quantitative data analysis, revealing students' perceptions about working with others in teams had improved as a result of the intervention as had their perceptions about their ability EI related skills. Qualitative analysis revealed rich, thick descriptions exploring this shift in perception among the 11 focal students, providing the evidence necessary to support the effectiveness of the intervention. Results suggested the possibilities for improved teamwork in the classroom.
