Structural Identification and Damage Detection Using Genetic Algorithms
Author: Chan Ghee Koh
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781138111929
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
Rapid advances in computational methods and computer capabilities have led to a new generation of structural identification strategies. Robust and efficient methods have successfully been developed on the basis of genetic algorithms (GA). This volume presents the development of a novel GA-based identification strategy that contains several advantageous features compared to previous methods. Focusing on structural identification problems with limited and noise contaminated measurements; it provides insight into the effects of various identification parameters on the identification accuracy for systems with known mass. It then proposes a generalization for systems with unknown mass, stiffness and damping properties. The GA identification strategy is subsequently extended for structural damage detection. The findings of the output-only strategy and substructural identification represent a great leap forward from the practical point of view. This book is intended for researchers, engineers and graduate students in structural and mechanical engineering, particularly for those interested in model calibration, parameter estimation and damage detection of structural and mechanical systems using the state-of-the-art GA methodology.

Structural Health Monitoring Using Genetic Fuzzy Systems
Author: Prashant M. Pawar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0857299077
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 135
Book Description
Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged as a prominent research area in recent years owing to increasing concerns about structural safety, and the need to monitor and extend the lives of existing structures. Structural Health Monitoring Using Genetic Fuzzy Systems elaborates the process of intelligent SHM development and implementation using the evolutionary system. The use of a genetic algorithm automates the development of the fuzzy system, and makes the method easy to use for problems involving a large number of measurements, damage locations and sizes; such problems being typical of SHM. The ideas behind fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and genetic fuzzy systems are also explained. The functionality of the genetic fuzzy system architecture is elucidated within a case-study framework, covering: • SHM of beams; • SHM of composite tubes; and • SHM of helicopter rotor blades. Structural Health Monitoring Using Genetic Fuzzy Systems will be useful for aerospace, civil and mechanical engineers working with structures and structured components. It will also be useful for computer scientists and applied mathematicians interested in the application of genetic fuzzy systems to engineering problems.

Book Description
Due to an ever-decreasing supply in raw materials and stringent constraints on conventional energy sources, demand for lightweight, efficient and low-cost structures has become crucially important in modern engineering design. This requires engineers to search for optimal and robust design options to address design problems that are commonly large in scale and highly nonlinear, making finding solutions challenging. In the past two decades, metaheuristic algorithms have shown promising power, efficiency and versatility in solving these difficult optimization problems. This book examines the latest developments of metaheuristics and their applications in structural engineering, construction engineering and earthquake engineering, offering practical case studies as examples to demonstrate real-world applications. Topics cover a range of areas within engineering, including big bang-big crunch approach, genetic algorithms, genetic programming, harmony search, swarm intelligence and some other metaheuristic methods. Case studies include structural identification, vibration analysis and control, topology optimization, transport infrastructure design, design of reinforced concrete, performance-based design of structures and smart pavement management. With its wide range of everyday problems and solutions, Metaheursitic Applications in Structures and Infrastructures can serve as a supplementary text for design courses and computation in engineering as well as a reference for researchers and engineers in metaheuristics, optimization in civil engineering and computational intelligence. - Review of the latest development of metaheuristics in engineering. - Detailed algorithm descriptions with focus on practical implementation. - Uses practical case studies as examples and applications.
