Excerpt from Structural Changes in West European Agriculture, 1950-70 In current prices the value of agricultural output increased for all West European countries during 1950 - 70, although the relative shares of the value of agricultural output changed little. The countries with the greatest increases in agricultural output tend to be livestock-based and, in general, economically prosperous. Output value tripled in France, West Germany, and the Netherlands during the past two decades. Western Europe in 1970 devoted over half its total land area to agriculture. Of the agricultural area, a little more than half was arable land and orchards.
