American Sheep

American Sheep PDF Author: Brett Bannor
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 0820367176
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
"American Sheep introduces the "remarkable story" of how sheep helped shape American history from the colonial era through the early twentieth century. By introducing the readers to a cast of characters-some forgotten and some famous-whose lives intersected with sheep, the book illuminates the roles the animals played in the "growth and development of the United States." John Brown's relationship with sheep, for example, reveals how "sheep culture influenced racial relations." And John Muir's fears about sheep grazing in Yosemite were central to the development of the environmental movement his name is most often attached to. American Sheep, in other words, is a book that shears away our misunderstandings of the past and weaves sheep into the fabric of American economic and social history"--

Finite Superstrings

Finite Superstrings PDF Author: John Gerald Taylor
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810209698
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
This is the first complete account of the construction and finiteness analysis of multi-loop scattering amplitudes for superstrings, and of the guarantee that for certain superstrings (in particular the heterotic one), the symmetries of the theory in the embedding space-time are those of the super-poincar‚ group SP10 and that the multi-loop amplitudes are each finite. The book attempts to be self-contained in its analysis, although it draws on the works of many researchers. It also presents the first complete field theory for such superstrings. As such it demonstrates that gravity can be quantized satisfactorily by superstrings.

Masculinities in Forests

Masculinities in Forests PDF Author: Carol J. Pierce Colfer
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000209822
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Masculinities in Forests: Representations of Diversity demonstrates the wide variability in ideas about, and practice of, masculinity in different forests, and how these relate to forest management. While forestry is widely considered a masculine domain, a significant portion of the literature on gender and development focuses on the role of women, not men. This book addresses this gap and also highlights how there are significant, demonstrable differences in masculinities from forest to forest. The book develops a simple conceptual framework for considering masculinities, one which both acknowledges the stability or enduring quality of masculinities, but also the significant masculinity-related options available to individual men within any given culture. The author draws on her own experiences, building on her long-term experience working globally in the conservation and development worlds, also observing masculinities among such professionals. The core of the book examines masculinities, based on long-term ethnographic research in the rural Pacific Northwest of the US; Long Segar, East Kalimantan; and Sitiung, West Sumatra, both in Indonesia. The author concludes by pulling together the various strands of masculine identities and discussing the implications of these various versions of masculinity for forest management. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of forestry, gender studies and conservation and development, as well as practitioners and NGOs working in these fields.
