Adolescent depression is a serious mental health problem, because it is both an externalizing and internalizing disorder. Understanding the etiology of depression is important when examining which causal variables are applicable to adolescents. The models of adolescent depression for which there is the most empirical support are: genetic, biological, stress, and the impact of puberty (Garber, 2000; Lewinsohn & Essau, 2002). However, results have been mixed with which variables are more causal, except for female gender showing higher indices o f depression than male gender. Few studies have explored variables of race and ethnicity, such as acculturation and racial identity, as indices for higher rates of depression among adolescents. The purpose of the present study is to examine clinical depression in African American and Latino American adolescents. The research design of this study is Quasi-Experimental. The study will utilize the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV), Childhood version (KID-SCID) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), as well as the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire-Revised version (ATQ-R), and the Children's Somatization Inventory (CSI), for the purpose of highlighting similarities and differences across gender and racial/ethnic variables. This study will explore the potential value of the descriptive measures o f depression, by utilizing the SCID and BDI, to examine depressive symptomatology among these populations. This present study will further assess other variables that may be significant contributors to depression among these populations by utilizing the MEIM, ATQ-R, and the CSI, to assess racial and ethnic positive identity, cognitive patterns, and somatization of distress. The intended contribution of this study is to help future psychologists continue to develop treatment methods that are culturally and racially sensitive in therapy specialized to meet the diverse needs o f all adolescents. Funding for this study will be sought from the Center for Mental Health Services' Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program, which offers a grant through the National Institute of Mental Health at 50,000 direct costs per year, limited to two years total.

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the mental health literacy of Mexican-American adolescents concerning perinatal depression. The final project is a qualitative descriptive study via deductive and inductive content analysis. Categories and subcategories are presented using the mental health literacy framework. Participants were recruited from urban high schools in Southwestern United States. Twenty pregnant and postpartum (perinatal) Mexican-American adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 years participated in this study. Interpersonal conflict was the most common cause of depressive symptoms as adolescents described strained relationships with the father of the baby and family members. Emotional and instrumental support were most important to adolescents in alleviating stress and depression. Family members and their significant other were individuals that adolescents turned to for support. Family members, the internet, health providers, and mothers who had previously experienced perinatal depression were mentioned as sources of mental health information. However, those who indicated internet sources were unable to explain how information would be verified for accuracy. Although participants were able to identify symptoms of depression, many expressed difficulties in recognizing depressive symptoms. Recognition was facilitated through self-appraisals and appraisal of others. Adolescents who experienced criticism due to their pregnancy status were apprehensive about discussing depressive symptoms as many feared it would lead to more criticism and judgement. Cultural beliefs surrounding motherhood influenced perceptions about depression. Participants often ignored or minimized their symptoms as mothers were often regarded as strong, resilient figures within the family unit. In regards to perceptions about health professionals and treatment, results were somewhat mixed. Adolescents were ambivalent or unfamiliar with treatments and some believed pharmacologic treatments were not beneficial. Participants overwhelmingly expressed that empathy and warmth facilitated professional help-seeking. Health care providers were seen as knowledgeable, but it was important for adolescents to first establish rapport before disclosing their mental health concerns. Utilization of the mental health literacy framework provided a comprehensive description of Mexican-American adolescents’ perceptions about perinatal depression. Consideration of sociocultural environment, values, and beliefs are indicated during interactions with and development of interventions for perinatal Mexican-American adolescents

Understanding the relationship between depression and drug use is essential given that drug users with depression are more likely to engage in high risk drug use behaviors. The current study aimed to explore the risk or protective relationship of the cultural values of familismo, personalismo, fatalismo, and machismo and depression among Mexican American heroin injecting men. Furthermore, this research aimed to explore the relationship between chronic neighborhood stress, acute stress, and depression among the aforementioned population. This work aimed to identify strengths clinicians may utilize when working with this population while simultaneously identify risks ripe for clinical intervention. Data for the current analysis comes from a study of Mexican-American injection heroin users. A cross-sectional research design and field intensive outreach methodology was utilized to recruit 227 Mexican-American men. Participants who met the criteria for depression (CESD) were categorized into depressed and non-depressed groups. Selected covariates associated with the dependent variable were examined using logistic regression. Findings suggest that respondents with high familismo and fatalismo scores were less likely to score high for depressive symptomatology. Additionally, findings revealed that chronic stress was a risk factor for depressive symptomatology while acute stress was protective. The results begin to elucidate the protective and risk nature of culture and community for depression among a group of Mexican American heroin injectors residing in the Barrio.
