Book Description
Excerpt from Bull Run Its Strategy and Tactics From the point of view of the military art one can mark off, in the history of the Civil War, three periods. In the first, we find little but crudeness; in the second, crudeness is flanked by great daring and brilliancy; in the third, brilliancy sobers down to a ripe and masterly exposition of military science; first was Bull Run, then came the Second Manassas, and last of all the terrific struggle from the Wilderness to Appomattox. That is why one is tempted to begin at the beginning, to examine the conditions under which was fought the first conflict of the Civil War. By investigating its crudities, we shall understand better the brilliancy and the maturity that followed. Letters on Strategy, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Pages : 436

Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on Strategy, Vol. 1 of 2 Varying circumstances, and the uncertainty of the in formation about the enemy, often make it hard even for a good strategist to hold fast to his original resolutions and to carry out the necessary steps for their execution. The Views of the strategist may often become obscured by the cloud of contradictory reports about the enemy, and so what was before perfectly clear to him is no longer so well defined. All this renders it difficult to write well about strategy. Only those who have passed through the mental struggles which form part of its execution can be sure that their ideas upon the art will be just. I gladly wrote to you about tactics, because I had had practical experience and could tell you the results of my own Observation in war and could judge of that of others. In strategy, however, I have had but little experience, for I have had very few opportunities of being present when determinations were come to, and still fewer of expressing my own views on them. Practical Instruction in Minor Tactics and Strategy, for the Use of the Regular Army and the Militia (Classic Reprint)

Practical Instruction in Minor Tactics and Strategy, for the Use of the Regular Army and the Militia (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John P. Wisser
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330844335
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Instruction in Minor Tactics and Strategy, for the Use of the Regular Army and the Militia In the Franco-German War the world was astonished at the thorough knowledge which the German officers possessed of the geography and topography of the field of operations, their familiarity with the principles of minor tactics, and the consequent rapidity of movement of their forces. To-day no European nation neglects the important studies by which this knowledge was acquired, viz., military geography and the solution of practical problems in minor tactics. The officers of the European armies begin their studies in these subjects at the military academies, complete their instruction therein at the schools of application, and at every post and garrison practice the application of the principles of minor tactics thus acquired, and perfect themselves in the knowledge of the geography of their own and surrounding countries by making rapid reconnaissances in summer and studying actual campaigns in winter, and applying to both practical tactical problems. The problems herein contained were simply compiled or adapted from those given to officers at posts, at the schools of application, and at the examinations at the war academies of Europe. The examples may be multiplied indefinitely, and applied to our own country and the campaigns of our own wars, and may thus add an interest to ordinary garrison duty, and serve to impart a knowledge of the country not otherwise attainable. There is little preparation required for the pursuit of this subject and the continued practice of this system of instruction. The works of reference required are few, and maps may be obtained from the Engineer Department, or foot and mounted reconnaissances may be made at the posts, which will furnish topographical maps sufficient for all ordinary purposes.
