Why are the British Bad at Manufacturing?

Why are the British Bad at Manufacturing? PDF Author: Karel Williams
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351244779
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
This book, first published in 1983, offers a new explanation for the poor performance of British manufacturing since 1950. Rather than invoke orthodox economic theory or general social factors, the book analyses four national conditions – enterprise control over the labour process; market structure and the composition of demand; the relation of manufacturing enterprise to financial institutions like banks and stock exchanges; and the relation of manufacturing enterprise to government.

Managing Strategy

Managing Strategy PDF Author: David C. Asch

ISBN: 1349243817
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
This text by Cliff Bowman and David Asch is designed for courses in strategic management, business strategy and business policy. It will be particularly suitable for MBAs, post experience students and undergraduates taking a one semester course. It will also appeal to practising managers in a wide range of organisations who are interested in developing a sound understanding of strategic issues. The book avoids an overly theoretical approach, concentrating instead on new ideas concerning the content and process of strategy and blending this with empirical findings in the area. The result is a book which focuses on implementing strategy, taking a more action oriented approach. Case study material arising from many years of teaching in leading management schools world-wide has also been included to make this an ideal text for a variety of courses.

UNITE History Volume 3 (1945-1960)

UNITE History Volume 3 (1945-1960) PDF Author: Marjorie Mayo
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1802071237
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
This is the third volume on the history of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), covering the period 1945 to 1960, and starting with an extraordinary moment in its history. There were such high hopes with the election of Attlee’s Labour government, committed to a series of radical reforms, establishing the Welfare State and nationalising key sectors of the economy. These reforms seemed to offer unique opportunities to move forwards towards what Nye Bevan, the main architect of the NHS, saw as a ‘new world both at home and abroad’. Or did it? This volume explores the challenges as well as the opportunities for radical reform, as these played out between 1945 and 1960. There was renewed industrial unrest, with disputes in the docks and transport industries, despite the best efforts of the Labour Government to contain them. Much remained to be achieved in terms of equalities, and there were challenges when it came to calls for international solidarity in the Cold War context. But still, there had been major developments in terms of trade union education. The T&G had become a much more democratic organisation, and, overall, was a more powerful, progressive force by the end of this period. This volume explores issues with continuing relevance for the trade union and labour movement.
