As a result, fire codes have required the underground storage of flammable liquids when associated with automotive and marine service stations where the product was transferred via an open system from one container to another. With the advent of environmental concern regarding the potential contamination of ground water and soil on the national level, state and national legislation has been enacted which has had the effect of forcing many tanks above ground. An increase in fire incidents involving such above ground tanks can be expected.
