Politics, Society, Self

Politics, Society, Self PDF Author: Geoff Gallop
Publisher: UWA Publishing
ISBN: 9781742583426
Category : Australia
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
Since retiring as Premier of Western Australia in 2006, Geoff Gallop has returned to his pre-political career as an academic. In the role of public intellectual, Gallop has focused on matters of the self within: society, contemporary politics, pragmatics, fundamentalism, fairness, and the meaning and importance of well-being for public policy and the person. From the international to the national, and down to the individual, Gallop brings a measured voice to the many debates that are universal, relevant, and personal. Gathered from public speeches and newspaper columns, this book of Gallop's essays is gently provocative and intellectually admirable, yet retains a personal voice.

Straight Jacket

Straight Jacket PDF Author: Matthew Todd
Publisher: Black Swan
ISBN: 9780552778404
Category : Gay men
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Written by Matthew Todd, editor of Attitude, the UK's best-selling gay magazine, Straight Jacket is a revolutionary clarion call for gay men, the wider LGBT community, their friends and family. Part memoir, part ground-breaking polemic, it looks beneath the shiny facade of contemporary gay culture and asks if gay people are as happy as they could be - and if not, why not? In an attempt to find the answers to this and many other difficult questions, Matthew Todd explores why statistics show a disproportionate number of gay people suffer from mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts and behaviour, and why significant numbers experience difficulty in sustaining meaningful relationships.

An Ocean Apart

An Ocean Apart PDF Author: Stephen D. Cohen
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 031338908X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Closing a critical gap in the literature examining the strained relationship between the U.S. and Japan, this book synthesizes the economic, political, historical, and cultural factors that have led these two nations, both practitioners of capitalism, along quite different paths in search of different goals. Taking an objective, multidisciplinary approach, the author argues that there is no single explanation for Japan's domestic economic or foreign trade successes. Rather, his analysis points to a systemic mismatch that has been misdiagnosed and treated with inadequate corrective measures. This systemic mismatch in the corporate strategy, economic policies, and attitudes of the U.S. and Japan created and is perpetuating three decades of bilateral economic frictions and disequilibria. As long as both the U.S. and Japan deal more with symptoms than causes, bilateral problems will persist. This book's unique analysis will encourage a better understanding on both sides of the Pacific of what has happened, is happening, and will continue to happen if corporate executives and policymakers in the two countries do not better realize the extent of their differences and adopt better corrective measures.

Collective Terms

Collective Terms PDF Author: Beth S. Epstein
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 0857450859
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
The banlieue, the mostly poor and working-class suburbs located on the outskirts of major cities in France, gained international media attention in late 2005 when riots broke out in some 250 such towns across the country. Pitting first- and second-generation immigrant teenagers against the police, the riots were an expression of the multiplicity of troubles that have plagued these districts for decades. This study provides an ethnographic account of life in a Parisian banlieue and examines how the residents of this multiethnic city come together to build, define, and put into practice their collective life. The book focuses on the French ideal of integration and its consequences within the multicultural context of contemporary France. Based on research conducted in a state-planned ville nouvelle, or New Town, the book also provides a view on how the French state has used urban planning to shore up national priorities for social integration. Collective Terms proposes an alternative reading of French multiculturalism, suggesting fresh ways for thinking through the complex mix of race, class, nation, and culture that increasingly defines the modern urban experience.

Immigration and Quality of Life in Ageing Societies

Immigration and Quality of Life in Ageing Societies PDF Author: Aeneas Zi Wang
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040109187
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
This edited book argues that a new perspective on immigration is needed. As many advanced economies are ageing, and their populations stagnate or decline, immigrants are increasingly required to fill in the gaps left behind by shrinking workforces. Against this backdrop, the outdated view that it is – and can only be – a privilege for immigrants to move temporarily from less to more developed economies needs a rethink. In particular, questions about how attractive a host destination can be for immigrants; not just in economic, but also in social, political, linguistic, and cultural terms should be raised. Considering in detail the situation in Japan and Germany – Japan where there are hardly any convenience stores without foreign employees, Germany where retirement homes would no longer function without foreign nursing staff – the book analyses migration to these two countries in different aspects such as education, training, and labour market participation, and policies and actions on the part of the state and policymakers in rendering moving to and living in these countries worthwhile. Bringing together leading scholars active in diverse aspects of migration in Japan and Germany, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars with an interest in immigration issues in these two countries specifically, and Europe and Asia more broadly.
