F.W. Harvey was one of a generation whose lives were splintered by the First World War, and one of that group of war poets for whom the war changed everything. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment only days after war was declared, and was among the first Territorials to land in France. As a Lance-Corporal he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for 'conspicuous gallantry' and was commissioned shortly afterwards. He survived the Somme offensive but in August 1916 was captured by the Germans while reconnoitring alone behind enemy lines. He spent the rest of the war in p-o-w camps. But Harvey was more than just a tough soldier. A contemporary of Sassoon, Brooke and Thomas – and with Ivor Gurney his closest friend – he wanted nothing more when 'at rest' than an interval of quiet in which to set down in verse his longing for his Gloucestershire homeland, his outrage at the waste of war, his joy in comradeship, his humour and his unflinching faith. These Saturday Night Soldiers from York and the northern West Riding of Yorkshire went out to face the might of the German Army in April 1915. Through the hot summer and dark winter that followed, they stopped bullets at the Battle of Aubers Ridge and choked on Phosgene gas at Ypres. Caught in the carnage of the notorious first day on the Somme, the West Yorkshire Territorials were held up by General Haig as convenient scapegoats for his tactical failure, only for the 1/5th Battalion to prove him wrong and redeem itself as an attacking force at the Battle of Thiepval Ridge, and then again at Passchendaele in 1917. In the last year of the war, the battalion helped fight a rear-guard action on the Menin Road, and was effectively wiped out at the Second Battle of Kemmel Ridge, only to be re-constituted in time to take part in the bloody advances at Cambrai and Valenciennes, which helped bring the conflict to an end.

A compact and competent history of this Indian Army unit, first raised in the Punjab in the 1840s. It was intended for internal security work and to guard the always turbulent North-West Frontier. Its first active operations, however, were in helping to quell the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. Under Gen. Sir Hope Grant it served at Mardan, Lucknow and through Oude, ending up on the border with Nepal. After the Mutiny, it became part of the Punjab Frontier Force. It took part in the second Afghan War as part of the Kurram Valley Field Force, fighting at the Peiwar Kotal, Charasia, Deh-Afghana and defending the Sherpur Cantonment. In the 1880s it operated against the Mahsud tribesmen. During the Great War, the regiment sailed for France and fought at the 1915 battles of Festubert, Neuve Chapelle, and Aubers Ridge. It was then ordered to Egypt, and took part in the Palestine campaign, helping to occupy Jerusalem. In the 1920s the unit took part in operations against Afghanistan and the Waziris. The text of this book is accompanied by five appendices with awards and Rolls of Honour from the Great War and Indian operations. There are 13 illustrations and six maps.
