One of the boys was excitedly telling his teacher, Miss Mayberry, about it the next morning. He was run down by an automobile and his right leg broken, and to the boys of the school this seemed almost the greatest misfortune that could come to a vigorous thirteen-year-old boy. "Now, if it had been his arm," suggested one sympathizer, "he could have that done up in a sling and come to school just the same." "Yes," said another, "and perhaps he could even have sold papers with his good hand." "My, won't he be disappointed not to get promoted next spring!" exclaimed one of the girls. Miss Mayberry, who had been listening but had said little, now spoke. "I must attend a teachers' meeting this afternoon, so I can't call on Howard, but I suggest that you appoint a committee of three to give him our sympathy and find out if there is anything we can do to help him." The pupils agreed to this eagerly, and the next morning directly after the opening exercises Miss Mayberry asked for a report from the visitors. Edwin Foster was made the spokesman.
