Book Description
The dynamical behavior of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) under a variety of conditions is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Under conditions of a single continuous-wave laser field, the initiation of the SBS process is treated by including the thermal fluctuations of the material density which lead to spontaneous Brillouin scattering. Predictions are made for the threshold of the Stokes light. The spectrum of the output Stokes light is predicted to exhibit gain-narrowing as the input laser intensity is increased. Under certain conditions, the Stokes output intensity is expected to exhibit nearly 100% fluctuations even far above the threshold for SBS. Experiments performed in a single-mode optical fiber verify many of the predictions of the theory. Stimulated Brillouin scattering in the presence of two counterpropagating laser beams is studied. Under these conditions, the laser beams become temporally unstable to the growth of Stokes and anti-Stokes light. For the case when the input intensities of the two waves are comparable, the threshold for instability can be significantly lower than he threshold for usual single-beam SBS and, for the case of a broad Brillouin line, the system can show a period-doubling route to chaos. This Brillouin instability was observed experimentally using carbon disulfide as the Brillouin-active material.

Book Description
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the most important example of a stimulated scattering process-light scattering that occurs when the intensity of the light field itself affects the propagating medium. A phenomenon that has been known of for some 35 years in solid state laser research, it has recently become relevant in the optical fiber ind

Book Description
Brillouin Scattering, Volume 109 in the Semiconductors and Semimetal series, marks the centenary of Leon Brillouin’s seminal 1922 paper which provided a detailed theory of the effect that now bears his name. Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is the strongest third order optical nonlinearity and plays an important role in contemporary science and applications, particularly lasers, communications, and fibre optics, as well as playing a new role in experimental physics and the life sciences. This volume provides a foundational perspective on Brillouin scattering, starting with a historical review of Brillouin scattering, the theory of SBS and the convergence between SBS and Optomechanics. We then consider SBS in several different waveguide geometries, including photonic crystal fibres, integrated optics and superfluids. From the leading researchers in the field Historical, theoretical, and scientific perspective Pedagogical

Book Description
Most genetics textbooks deal adequately with plant and animal genetics, but tend to neglect fungi except for two areas. Firstly, the ascus segregations which, in the 1960s, contributed so much to developing an understanding of the mechanism of recombination and secondly, the contribution that work on yeast (as a model eukaryote) is currently making to understanding cell cycle control and its genetic regulation. Consequently, most introductory genetics texts will leave the reader/student with the impression that fungi are of use when peculiarities of their structure or life style suit them to particular experimental approaches, but are not worth mentioning otherwise. The authors have produced a book that will compensate for this imbalance. This book discusses the genetics of fungi, or mycology, in a way that is attractive and challenging, succinct yet comprehensive, sensitive to commercial and applied aspects, yet also theoretical, dealing with their genetics from molecules to individuals to population. This short text will be an ideal supplement to the established basic textbooks in genetics or can be used as the sole text for an advanced course devoted to fungal genetics.
