Book Description
The Adrenal Medulla, 1989-1991 offers a comprehensive review of the world literature on the adrenal medulla published during this period. The book emphasizes the role of the adrenal medulla in advancing our knowledge of neuroscience; for example, the Nobel Prize-winning technique of patch clamping has been applied to stimulus-secretion coupling in adrenal chromaffin cells. The book also discusses such topics as the ability to image the distribution of calcium within individual neural cells, the ability to measure individual packets of neurotransmitter as they are released from cells, and advances in the understanding of ionic channels, cell-to-cell interactions, cell proliferation, sympathoadrenal ontogeny, growth factors, enzymatic biosynthetic pathways, electron and proton transfer, and neural pathways. Topics covered in clinical medicine include recent progress in the transplantation of the adrenal medulla to the brain as a treatment for Parkinson's disease and the latest reports on pheochromocytoma. The Adrenal Medulla, 1989-1991 is an essential book for neurobiologists, neurochemists, experimental biologists, physiologists, cell biologists, and informed clinicians.

Stress and Mental Disorders
Author: Richard McCarty
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0190697261
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 673
Book Description
Stress has been recognized as an important factor in the development or recurrence of various mental disorders, from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder to anxiety disorders. Stressful stimuli also appear to exert their effects by acting upon individuals with susceptible genotypes. Over the past 50 years, animal models have been developed to study these dynamic interactions between stressful stimuli and genetically susceptible individuals during prenatal and postnatal development and into adulthood. Stress and Mental Disorders: Insights from Animal Models begins with a discussion of the history of psychiatric diagnosis and the recent goal of moving toward precision psychiatry, followed by a review of clinical research on connections between stressful stimuli and the development of psychiatric disorders. Chapters are also included on neuroendocrine, immune, and brain systems involved in responses to stress. Additional chapters focus on the development of animal models in psychiatry and the susceptibility of the developing organism to stressful stimuli. Subsequent chapters are devoted to animal models of specific stress-sensitive psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These chapters also focus on identification of promising molecular targets for development of new drug therapies. The section concludes with a chapter on animal models of resilience to stress-induced behavioral alterations as a newer approach to understanding why some animals are susceptible to stress and others are resilient, even though they are essentially genetically identical. The final chapter discusses how these basic laboratory studies are providing promising leads for future breakthroughs in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders.

Transduction in Biological Systems
Author: Cecilia Hidalgo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468457365
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
The present volume originated from the workshop "Transduction in Biological Sys tems," held at the Marine Biological Station of the Universidad de Valparaiso, Mon temar, Chile, May 23-30, 1988, and contains contributions from most of the partici pants in the workshop. The title of both the workshop and the book reflects accurately the central theme discussed during several days of intense debate and profound intellectual exchange in the peaceful environment offered by the central coast of Chile. It was apparent that the workshop was a great success-a sentiment expressed by many seasoned attendees, some of whom dared opinions as strong as "It was the best ever." There is no single reason to explain why this workshop was so successful. Certainly instrumental was the incredible effort displayed by the Chilean Organizing Committee in selecting adequate facilities and in organizing social events that supplemented the scien tific sessions and provided an authentic fraternal environment for the participants. Equally important were the foreign participants, who enthusiastically gave of their time to take part in the event, and the students, who came from Chile as well as from several other Latin American countries, and who applied the necessary pressure in their repeated demands for scientific clarity, accuracy, and sincerity.
