Book Description
Diagnosed with cancer. Told there was no cure. Julie Randall refused to give up. Her tenacity saw her included in a 70 person drug trial. She is Patient 71. An inspiring true story of resilience, tenacity, and a promise that fueled one woman's fight for life. Four days after her fiftieth birthday celebrations, Julie Randall suffered a very sudden and severe seizure at work. Out of the blue she went from a fit, healthy, fun-loving wife and mother of two, to not knowing what had happened. Or why. Rushed to hospital by ambulance, it was discovered Julie had a malignant brain tumor. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Advanced Melanoma, she was told to get her affairs in order because she didn't have long to live. After getting over the initial shock, Julie fought off the fear and started searching for hope. She found an American experimental drug trial, but was told there was only room for 70 patients and the numbers were full. Julie had promised her teenage daughters that she would find a way to 'fix it' so she refused to take no for an answer. Her tenacity paid off and she flew to Oregon and the Providence Cancer Center. High Anxiety

High Anxiety PDF Author: Patricia Mellencamp

ISBN: 9780253207357
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 446

Book Description
"... acute look at the state of contemporary culture... A humorous... book, it yields rewarding advice for our perception of reality and fiction." --Back Stage / Shoot "Mellencamp's ease of movement between the conceptual and the commonplace is the great strength of this work.... High Anxiety is an invaluable contribution to the cultural studies debate... " --Art + Text Written with wit and flair, High Anxiety is a critique of the temporality of U.S. television, a narrative journey between Freud's texts on obsession and the cult of anxiety pervading contemporary culture. Operation Desert Storm, I Love Lucy, Anita Hill, Twin Peaks, and Oprah are a few of the subjects which form this "anxious" mosaic of popular culture.

Fables of the Law

Fables of the Law PDF Author: Daniela Carpi
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110496682
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
The latest development concerning the metaphorical use of the fairy tale is the legal perspective. The law had and has recourse to fairy tales in order to speak of the nomos and its subversion, of the politically correct and of the various means that have been used to enforce the law. Fairy tales are a fundamental tool to examine legal procedures and structures in their many failings and errors. Therefore, we have privileged the term "fables" of the law just to stress the ethical perspective: they are moral parables that often speak of justice miscarried and justice sought. Law and jurists are creators of "fables" on the view that law is born out of the facts (ex facto ius oritur) so that there is a need for narrative coherence both on the level of the case and the level of legislation (or turned the other way around: what does it mean if no such coherence is found?). This is especially of interest given the influx of all kinds of new technologies that are "fabulous" in themselves and hard to incorporate in traditional doctrinal schemes and thus in the construction of a new reality.
