Stigma Revisited: Implications of the Mark is a collection of qualitative, empirical studies of populations who experience stigma. Discrimination, marginality and social injustice are recognized as indelibly tied to the phenomena of stigma. This volume builds on the work of Erving Goffman and integrates a larger, structural understanding of stigma based in Michel Foucault’s governmentality writings. Contemporary notions of risk, riskiness and danger are linked to the labelling of “deviant” populations in the name of social control and risk management; these labels result in the institutional and systemic perpetuation of stereotypes and stigmatic attitudes. The research presented in this book addresses the individual experience of symbolic stigma as well as the collective impact of structural stigma. It empirically outlines the landscape of employability supports available to reentering women, the ‘steps to employment’ women are directed to follow, and the barriers to employment they face and theoretically explores the subject positions of criminalized and employable women. This book offers a contemporary contribution to the scholarship of the past three decades that has queried, monitored, and challenged practices and policies relating to women’s corrections in Canada. Based on data gathered about community-based employment supports available to reentering women in Ontario, Canada, exploring how language constructs the subject positions of criminalized and employable women, and bringing into conversation the extensive body of work about women’s employment and employability and reintegration, the book marks a unique but important intersection of these empirical and theoretical domains. Strippers may be the main attraction of strip clubs, but their work is bolstered by people who are rarely meaningfully considered: those who organize, supervise, manage, or coordinate the labour of erotic dancers, including managers, bouncers, and disc jockeys. Playing the Supporting Role contends it is essential to explore the managerial layer in order to have a comprehensive understanding of the power relations and working conditions in the erotic dance sector – and, consequently, distinguish banal or beneficial from unfair or exploitative sex-industry labour practices. Focusing primarily on third parties in the erotic dance sector, this book examines who these individuals are; how they manage clients, workers, security, and stigma; the services and resources they provide; and, in turn, strippers’ experiences and perceptions of these practices. Through qualitative interview data with third parties and strippers from two Ontario cities, Playing the Supporting Role ultimately advances an understanding of third-party work as gendered, classed, and racialized occupational performance in a stigmatized labour sector that is simultaneously over- and under-regulated.

Employment for former prisoners is a critical pathway toward reintegration into society and is central to the processes of desistance from crime. Nevertheless, the economic climate in Western countries has aggravated the ability of former prisoners and people with criminal records to find gainful employment. It is focused on the individual narratives of 15 girls and young women who have participated in a victim-offender restorative justice (RJ) conference and the perspectives of youth justice practitioners. Gender, Power and Restorative Justice expands feminist engagement with RJ by focusing critical attention on the importance of the social construction of gender, the exercise of power, shame, stigma, muting and resistance to girls’ experiences of RJ conferencing.
