Stiffness of Asphalt-aggregate Mixes

Stiffness of Asphalt-aggregate Mixes PDF Author: Akhtarhusein A. Tayebali
Publisher: Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp)
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
This report presents an evaluation of several test systems for stiffness determination of asphalt-aggregate mixes, including 1) axial resilient stiffness, 2) diametral resilient stiffness, 3) resilient and dynamic flexural stiffness, and 4) dynamic shear stiffness. All of the stiffness test systems were found to be sensitive to mix and test variables, especially to asphalt source, asphalt content, aggregate type, and air-void content. Models are presented to permit estimation of flexural stiffness (and loss-stiffness) from shear stiffness (and loss-stiffness in shear) at 20 deg C and 10 Hz frequency.

Permanent Deformation Response of Asphalt Aggregate Mixes

Permanent Deformation Response of Asphalt Aggregate Mixes PDF Author: Christine W. Curtis
Publisher: National Research Council
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
This report describes the research conducted on permanent deformation of asphalt concrete mixes as part of the SHRP Asphalt Research Program. Divided into three sections the report addresses the following: the development of a series of accelerated performance tests to measure the permanent deformation response and a constitutive relationship to define it; validation of the binder properties included in the SHRP binder specification; and the use of the test methodology in an asphalt concrete mix design and analysis system.

Stage 1 Validation of the Relationship Between Asphalt Properties and Asphalt-aggregate Mix Performance

Stage 1 Validation of the Relationship Between Asphalt Properties and Asphalt-aggregate Mix Performance PDF Author:
Publisher: Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp)
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
A primary objective for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) A-003A contract was to extend and verify the results obtained by other SHRP contractors on the performance-related characteristics of asphalt binders in paving mixes. This report specifically addresses validation of the following: 1) binder properties proposed by the A-002A contractor to predict asphalt-aggregate mix performance in terms of fatigue, permanent deformation, and thermal cracking; and 2) conditioning procedures that produce binder properties representative of those in a pavement immediately after construction and after several years of service. While water sensitivity requirements are not included in the binder specification, validation efforts in the water-sensitivity area are also described. Materials used in the investigation included 8 to 16 asphalt binders and 2 to 4 aggregates obtained from the SHRP Materials Reference Library.

Asphalt Mixture Selection

Asphalt Mixture Selection PDF Author: Cliff Nicholls
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0429867905
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
This practical guide starts with a survey of the types of site and the asphalt properties which are required. Various external influences which may affect the relative importance of some properties are addressed, and the interplay of sites and external is considered. Asphalt mixture types and their properties are reviewed, largely as defined in the EN 13108 series but subdivided into further categories, and into maximum nominal coarse aggregate sizes using EN 13043 basic set plus set 2 sizes. Guidance is given, including using flowcharts, of the different mixtures that are suitable for each situation. In some cases a range of choices or mixtures with different degrees of suitability is offered. The guidance covers surface course, binder course and base, but with more focus on the surface course where the external influence is most significant. The site and external influence combinations on which a mixture can be used successfully are also given. The book is primarily intended for those who select asphalt on an occasional basis, such as architects or housing developers, but could be of use to other engineers with limited experience. It is also useful as an educational textbook for those studying asphalt technology.
