Book Description
Correspondence from Stephen Elliott to John Torrey, dated 1818-1823. With long gaps between letters, Elliott apologizes for not writing sooner, delayed by ill health and outside commitments, and thanks Torrey for packages of plants and mineral specimens. He discusses Torrey's book projects and his own-- the two men exchange copies of their work along with specimens-- and complains of the lack of fellow botanists in Charleston and the tediousness of corresponding with Europe, with delays of up to a year between letters. Elliott includes "wish lists" of plant and mineral specimens in two of his letters, and confesses that if he was living in an area with more minerals, he might have favored them over plants.

Book Description
Correspondence from Stephen H. Long to John Torrey and William Baldwin, dated 1819. The first letter, dated February 18, 1819, is addressed to John Torrey, and describes the possible forms of payment for prospective naturalists participating in Long's upcoming expedition: "It is left optionary with ourselves, whether a pecuniary consideration shall be allowed, or the Naturalists have the privilege of making any disposition they may deem proper, of the Curiosities &c., that we may collect. The utmost compensation that can be allowed is $2.00 per Day and one Ration..." The second letter, dated June 19, 1819, is a copy of official orders from Long to botanist William Baldwin, who participated-- and died-- on that expedition.

Book Description
Correspondence from John Torrey to Amos Eaton, dated 1818, discussing the distribution of Eaton's books to booksellers; the difficulty of identifying a shipment of specimens Eaton recently sent ("You send me such poor specimens of your plants that if I did not know them well I should have never been able to determine them"); work on Eaton's Manual; and other botanical matters, as well as Torrey's recent graduation from medical school: "I have now got my sheepskin & have full powers granted me to kill & destroy in any part of the earth-- I expect soon to open an office in the City." The second document is titled "Remarks on Eaton's translations of Acharius," with notes on a number of lichen genera; it is undated, and may have originally been enclosed with the letter. Elliott also praises Say's work on conchology published in the Journal of the Natural Academy of Sciences. The verso contains a draft response from Say, cataloging the specimens and providing notes on their characteristics and whether they were unknown to him, such as the genera Bulimulus and Lymnaea.
