De legendarische en mysterieuze Tan Malaka verscheen, na twintig jaar verbanning en ondergrondse actie, kort na de Proclamatie van de Indonesische onafhankelijkheid op 17 augustus 1945 weer in de openbaarheid. Hij bood een radicaal alternatief voor de gematigde koers van Soekarno en Hatta, het leidersduo van de Republik Indonesia, maar hij dolf het onderspit en werd in maart 1946 gevangengezet. Pas in september 1948 kwam hij vrij. Hij richtte toen de Partai Murba op, die de plaats wilde innemen van de in de Madioen-opstand neergeslagen communistische partij. Na de Nederlandse militaire actie van december 1948 volgde hij het guerrillaverzet; in februari 1949 werd hij doodgeschoten bij een interne afrekening. Tan Malaka's levensloop is vaak in mysterie gehuld. In dit boek wordt dit grotendeels ontrafeld, zoals ook waar en door wie hij om het leven werd gebracht. Zijn prominente rol tijdens de Indonesische Revolutie—actief en als symbool—maken het noodzakelijk uitgebreid de politieke verwikkelingen in de Republik en in de verdeelde linkse beweging te beschrijven. In vele opzichten worden over doorslaggevende gebeurtenissen in de Revolutie nieuwe gegevens en visies verschaft. This is an odd book. An extensive and sometimes annotated bibliography, it is not a book in the sense of a narrative. However, if treated as a book in the traditional sense it leads the reader through a broad spectrum of feelings of amazement, curiosity and desire: amazement about the sheer volume, richness and detail of theliterature on Batavia/Jakarta; curiosity about the contents of certain publications or series of publications with attractive titles; and a feeling of desire immediately to begin an investigation into one of the appealing subjects stumbled upon while leafing through. The bibliography contains over 5000 titles classified into 42 broad subject categories. The vast majority of the publications consists of books, but the number of articles is also very substantial. Most of these titles (3500) were produced after 1950. The larger part of the publications are written in Indonesian, Dutch, and to a lesser extent English. But also publications in such languages as French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian, and many others were listed. Indexes of authors, of subjects and of titles make this bibliography easily accessible.

The story of leprosy in the Dutch East Indies from the beginning of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th reveals important themes in the colonial enterprise across the territory that is today’s Indonesia. Operating in a territory with only a few hundred Western-trained doctors and a population in the tens of millions, Dutch colonial officials approached leprosy with uncertainty and anxiety. In the early 19th century, the Dutch administration simply removed sufferers from public view: campaigns targetted anyone “looking ugly”. Towards the end of the century, colonial science considered leprosy a hereditary disease of tropical subjects, and therefore undeserving of the colonial government’s limited resources. The leprosariums were emptied. At the start of the 20th century, a growing understanding that leprosy was spread by a bacillus caused a panic that leprosy might spread from the tropics to the colonial metropole. The mixed emotions of pity, fear and revulsion associated with management of the disease intensified, and fed into broader debates on colonial policy. The experts were unsure, and resources were never forthcoming, and despite a view that “bacteria are the same everywhere”, Dutch leprosy treatment in the East Indies mobilized traditional healing practices and relied on home care. Leo van Bergen’s detailed, attentive study to changing policies for treatment and prevention of leprosy (now often called Hansen’s disease) is fascinating medical history, and provides a useful lens for understanding colonialism in Indonesia.
