Book Description
We review the status of two ongoing large-scale searches for axions which may constitute the dark matter of our Milky Way halo. The experiments are based on the microwave cavity technique proposed by Sikivie, and marks a ''second-generation'' to the original experiments performed by the Rochester-Brookhaven-Fermilab collaboration, and the University of Florida group.

Book Description
We report nearly all astrophysical and cosmological data point convincingly to a large component of cold dark matter in the Universe. The axion particle, first theorized as a solution to the strong charge-parity problem of quantum chromodynamics, has been established as a prominent CDM candidate. Cosmic observation and particle physics experiments have bracketed the unknown mass of the axion between approximately a [mu]eV and a meV. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiement (ADMX) has successfully completed searches between 1.9 and 3.7 [mu]eV down to the KSVZ photon-coupling limit. ADMX and the Axion Dark Matter eXperiement High-Frequency (ADMX-HF) will search for axions at weaker coupling and/or higher frequencies within the next few years. Status of the experiments, current research and development, and projected mass-coupling exclusion limits are presented.

Book Description
We describe the status of a sensitive search for halo axions with masses in the [mu]eV range. A tunable large-volume and low-loss microwave cavity is operated at low temperature in a strong magnetic field. Resonant Primakoff conversion of axions into photons takes place when the cavity frequency is matched to the axion mass. No positive signal has been found so far, and we are able to exclude hadronic axions as the dominant halo component over a significant axion mass range. Future plans for a detector upgrade are outlined.

Dark Matter in the Universe
Author: Marc S. Seigar
Publisher: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
ISBN: 1681741180
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 71
Book Description
The study of dark matter, in both astrophysics and particle physics, has emerged as one of the most active and exciting topics of research in recent years. This book reviews the history behind the discovery of missing mass (or unseen mass) in the Universe, and ties this into the proposed extensions to the Standard Model of Particle Physics (such as Supersymmetry), which were being proposed within the same time frame. This book is written as an introduction to these problems at the forefront of astrophysics and particle physics, with the goal of conveying the physics of dark matter to beginning undergraduate majors in scientific fields. The book goes onto describe existing and upcoming experiments and techniques, which will be used to detect dark matter either directly on indirectly.

Probing Luminous And Dark Matter: A Symposium In Honor Of Adrian Melissinos
Author: Ashok Das
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814542954
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
Of late, the fields of astroparticle physics, particle physics and nuclear physics have been developing at a dramatic speed. This book constitutes the proceedings of a symposium intended to highlight some of the main directions being pursued in these related areas, and to seek a commonality among them. The symposium was held to honor the many achievements of Professor Adrian Melissinos, who has contributed to most of the developments addressed at the meeting.

Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814491179
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 664
Book Description
The objective of the workshop series “The Identification of Dark Matter” is to assess critically the status of work attempting to identify what constitutes dark matter; in particular, to consider what techniques are currently being used, how successful they are, and what new techniques are likely to improve the prospects for identifying dark matter candidates in the future. This proceedings volume includes reviews on major particle astrophysics topics in the field of dark matter, as well as short contributed papers.
