Annual Reviews of Computational Physics IV

Annual Reviews of Computational Physics IV PDF Author: Dietrich Stauffer
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810227531
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
Quantum phenomena and methods are the core of this volume in our series which publishes rapidly reviews of topics in computational physics. In addition, we look at phase transitions in Ising lattices, in continuum fluids, polymer solutions, and end with biological ageing. As before, papers were submitted by e-mail, and these files were used directly to produce the book, for increased speed and reliability.

Dynamics: Models and Kinetic Methods for Non-equilibrium Many Body Systems

Dynamics: Models and Kinetic Methods for Non-equilibrium Many Body Systems PDF Author: John Karkheck
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940114365X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the kinetic approach to dynamic many-body problems. Modern kinetic theory offers a unifying theoretical framework within which a great variety of seemingly unrelated systems can be explored in a coherent way. Kinetic methods are currently being applied in such areas as the dynamics of colloidal suspensions, granular material flow, electron transport in mesoscopic systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents and other properties of classical many-body systems characterised by chaotic behaviour. The present work focuses on Brownian motion, dynamical systems, granular flows, and quantum kinetic theory.

Dynamics of Fluctuating Interfaces and Related Phenomena

Dynamics of Fluctuating Interfaces and Related Phenomena PDF Author: Doochul Kim
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814529621
Category : Crystal growth
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
"Roughening dynamics of various interface problems has been an attractive topic recently. The subject is related to many interdisciplinary branches in nonequilibrium statistical physics such as crystal growth, vortex dynamics, fractals and chaos, and self-organized critical phenomena. This volume includes pedagogical reviews of the scaling concepts in fluctuating surfaces, current theories on expitaxial growth phenomena and interface dynamics in disordered media, and many other related topics. Thus it serves as a valuable reference for both graduate students and researchers in statistical physics and materials science."--Publisher's website.

Jamming and Rheology

Jamming and Rheology PDF Author: Andrea J. Liu
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780748408795
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
The subject of jamming and rheology is a broad and interdisciplinary one that is generating increasing interest. This book deals with one of the oldest unsolved problems in condensed matter physics - that of the nature of glass transition in supercooled liquids. Jamming and Rheology is a collection of reprinted articles from several fields, ranging from structural glasses to foams and granular materials. Glassy relaxation and constrained dynamics (jamming) occur at all scales, from microscopic to macroscopic - in the glass transition of supercooled liquids, in fluids confined to thin films, in the structural arrest of particles such as granular materials, and in foams which must be driven by an applied stress in order to flow. Because jamming occurs at the transition between where a flow occurs and where motion stops, it is hoped that there may be a universal feature that describes this transition in all systems. This volume shows that the systems described above share many common phenomenological features, and covers work done by a wide range of scientists and technologists working in areas from physics to chemistry to chemical and mechanical engineering.

Quantum Phase Transitions

Quantum Phase Transitions PDF Author: Subir Sachdev
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521004541
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
Quantum Phase Transitions is the first book to describe in detail the fundamental changes that can occur in the macroscopic nature of matter at zero temperature due to small variations in a given external parameter. The subject plays a central role in the study of the electrical and magnetic properties of numerous important solid state materials. The author begins by developing the theory of quantum phase transitions in the simplest possible class of non-disordered, interacting systems - the quantum Ising and rotor models. Particular attention is paid to their non-zero temperature dynamic and transport properties in the vicinity of the quantum critical point. Several other quantum phase transitions of increasing complexity are then discussed and clarified. Throughout, the author interweaves experimental results with presentation of theoretical models, and well over 500 references are included. The book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics.

Time-Dependent Effects in Disordered Materials

Time-Dependent Effects in Disordered Materials PDF Author: Roger Pynn
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468474766
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
This volume comprised the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Geilo, Norway between 29 March and 9 April 1987. Al though the principal support for the meeting was provided by the NATO Cornrni ttee for Scientific Affairs, a number of additional sponsors also contributed. Additional funds were received from: Institutt for Energiteknikk (Norway) The Norwegian Research Council for Science and Humanities NORDITA (Denmark) VISTA (Norway) The organizing cornrni ttee would like to take this opportunity to thank all sponsors for their help in promoting an exciting and rewarding meeting. This Study Institute was the ninth of a series of meetings held in Geilo on subjects related to phase transitions and was a natural successor to the 1985 meeting on Scaling Phenomena in Disordered Systems. Many of the subjects discussed at the latter meeting were revisited in 1987, with time dependence as an added feature. Often the common theme was the concept of fractals first introduced into statistical physics some six years ago. However, by no means all disordered systems can be forced into a fractal framework, and many of the lectures reinforced this lesson.
