Statistical Inference as Severe Testing

Statistical Inference as Severe Testing PDF Author: Deborah G. Mayo
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108563309
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 503

Book Description
Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.

Dynamics of Information Systems: Mathematical Foundations

Dynamics of Information Systems: Mathematical Foundations PDF Author: Alexey Sorokin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146143906X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
This book presents recent developments and results found by participants of the Third International Conference on the Dynamics of Information Systems, which took place at the University of Florida, Gainesville FL, USA on February 16-18, 2011. The purpose of this conference was to bring together scientists and engineers from industry, government, and universities to exchange knowledge and results in a broad range of topics relevant to the theory and practice of the dynamics of information systems. Dynamics of Information plays an increasingly critical role in our society. The influence of information on social, biological, genetic, and military systems must be better understood to achieve large advances in the capability and understanding of these systems. Applications are widespread and include: research in evolutionary theory, optimization of information workflow, military applications, climate networks, collision work, and much more. Elements of the General Theory of Optimal Algorithms

Elements of the General Theory of Optimal Algorithms PDF Author: Ivan V. Sergienko
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030909085
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
In this monograph, the authors develop a methodology that allows one to construct and substantiate optimal and suboptimal algorithms to solve problems in computational and applied mathematics. Throughout the book, the authors explore well-known and proposed algorithms with a view toward analyzing their quality and the range of their efficiency. The concept of the approach taken is based on several theories (of computations, of optimal algorithms, of interpolation, interlination, and interflatation of functions, to name several). Theoretical principles and practical aspects of testing the quality of algorithms and applied software, are a major component of the exposition. The computer technology in construction of T-efficient algorithms for computing ε-solutions to problems of computational and applied mathematics, is also explored. The readership for this monograph is aimed at scientists, postgraduate students, advanced students, and specialists dealing with issues of developing algorithmic and software support for the solution of problems of computational and applied mathematics.

Conservation Laws and Symmetry: Applications to Economics and Finance

Conservation Laws and Symmetry: Applications to Economics and Finance PDF Author: Ryuzo Sato
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401711453
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
Modem geometric methods combine the intuitiveness of spatial visualization with the rigor of analytical derivation. Classical analysis is shown to provide a foundation for the study of geometry while geometrical ideas lead to analytical concepts of intrinsic beauty. Arching over many subdisciplines of mathematics and branching out in applications to every quantitative science, these methods are, notes the Russian mathematician A.T. Fomenko, in tune with the Renais sance traditions. Economists and finance theorists are already familiar with some aspects of this synthetic tradition. Bifurcation and catastrophe theo ries have been used to analyze the instability of economic models. Differential topology provided useful techniques for deriving results in general equilibrium analysis. But they are less aware of the central role that Felix Klein and Sophus Lie gave to group theory in the study of geometrical systems. Lie went on to show that the special methods used in solving differential equations can be classified through the study of the invariance of these equations under a continuous group of transformations. Mathematicians and physicists later recognized the relation between Lie's work on differential equations and symme try and, combining the visions of Hamilton, Lie, Klein and Noether, embarked on a research program whose vitality is attested by the innumerable books and articles written by them as well as by biolo gists, chemists and philosophers.

An Introduction to Bayesian Analysis

An Introduction to Bayesian Analysis PDF Author: Jayanta K. Ghosh
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387354336
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
This is a graduate-level textbook on Bayesian analysis blending modern Bayesian theory, methods, and applications. Starting from basic statistics, undergraduate calculus and linear algebra, ideas of both subjective and objective Bayesian analysis are developed to a level where real-life data can be analyzed using the current techniques of statistical computing. Advances in both low-dimensional and high-dimensional problems are covered, as well as important topics such as empirical Bayes and hierarchical Bayes methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. Many topics are at the cutting edge of statistical research. Solutions to common inference problems appear throughout the text along with discussion of what prior to choose. There is a discussion of elicitation of a subjective prior as well as the motivation, applicability, and limitations of objective priors. By way of important applications the book presents microarrays, nonparametric regression via wavelets as well as DMA mixtures of normals, and spatial analysis with illustrations using simulated and real data. Theoretical topics at the cutting edge include high-dimensional model selection and Intrinsic Bayes Factors, which the authors have successfully applied to geological mapping. The style is informal but clear. Asymptotics is used to supplement simulation or understand some aspects of the posterior.
