Analysis of Synchronous Machines

Analysis of Synchronous Machines PDF Author: T.A. Lipo
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439880689
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 606

Book Description
Analysis of Synchronous Machines, Second Edition is a thoroughly modern treatment of an old subject. Courses generally teach about synchronous machines by introducing the steady-state per phase equivalent circuit without a clear, thorough presentation of the source of this circuit representation, which is a crucial aspect. Taking a different approach, this book provides a deeper understanding of complex electromechanical drives. Focusing on the terminal rather than on the internal characteristics of machines, the book begins with the general concept of winding functions, describing the placement of any practical winding in the slots of the machine. This representation enables readers to clearly understand the calculation of all relevant self- and mutual inductances of the machine. It also helps them to more easily conceptualize the machine in a rotating system of coordinates, at which point they can clearly understand the origin of this important representation of the machine. Provides numerical examples Addresses Park’s equations starting from winding functions Describes operation of a synchronous machine as an LCI motor drive Presents synchronous machine transient simulation, as well as voltage regulation Applying his experience from more than 30 years of teaching the subject at the University of Wisconsin, author T.A. Lipo presents the solution of the circuit both in classical form using phasor representation and also by introducing an approach that applies MathCAD®, which greatly simplifies and expands the average student’s problem-solving capability. The remainder of the text describes how to deal with various types of transients—such as constant speed transients—as well as unbalanced operation and faults and small signal modeling for transient stability and dynamic stability. Finally, the author addresses large signal modeling using MATLAB®/Simulink®, for complete solution of the non-linear equations of the salient pole synchronous machine. A valuable tool for learning, this updated edition offers thoroughly revised content, adding new detail and better-quality figures.

Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Control

Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Control PDF Author: Debasish Mondal
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128177691
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Control, Second Edition analyzes severe outages due to the sustained growth of small signal oscillations in modern interconnected power systems. This fully revised edition addresses the continued expansion of power systems and the rapid upgrade to smart grid technologies that call for the implementation of robust and optimal controls. With a new chapter on MATLAB programs, this book describes how the application of power system damping controllers such as Power System Stabilizers and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System controllers—namely Static Var Compensator and Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator —can guard against system disruptions. Detailed mathematical derivations, illustrated case studies, the application of soft computation techniques, designs of robust controllers, and end-of-chapter exercises make it a useful resource to researchers, practicing engineers, and post-graduates in electrical engineering. - Considers power system small signal stability and provides various techniques to mitigate it - Offers a new and straightforward method of finding the optimal location of PSS in a multi-machine power system - Includes MATLAB programs and simulations for practical applications

Power System Dynamics

Power System Dynamics PDF Author: Jan Machowski
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119526345
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 885

Book Description
An authoritative guide to the most up-to-date information on power system dynamics The revised third edition of Power System Dynamics and Stability contains a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of information on the topic. The third edition continues the successful approach of the first and second editions by progressing from simplicity to complexity. It places the emphasis first on understanding the underlying physical principles before proceeding to more complex models and algorithms. The book is illustrated by a large number of diagrams and examples. The third edition of Power System Dynamics and Stability explores the influence of wind farms and virtual power plants, power plants inertia and control strategy on power system stability. The authors—noted experts on the topic—cover a range of new and expanded topics including: Wide-area monitoring and control systems. Improvement of power system stability by optimization of control systems parameters. Impact of renewable energy sources on power system dynamics. The role of power system stability in planning of power system operation and transmission network expansion. Real regulators of synchronous generators and field tests. Selectivity of power system protections at power swings in power system. Criteria for switching operations in transmission networks. Influence of automatic control of a tap changing step-up transformer on the power capability area of the generating unit. Mathematical models of power system components such as HVDC links, wind and photovoltaic power plants. Data of sample (benchmark) test systems. Power System Dynamics: Stability and Control, Third Edition is an essential resource for students of electrical engineering and for practicing engineers and researchers who need the most current information available on the topic.

Power System Stability

Power System Stability PDF Author: László Rácz
Publisher: Elsevier Publishing Company
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
The objective of this book is to investigate the stability problems of power systems by using state-space analysis. The authors have aimed to meet the need for a book that would cover fairly briefly the theoretical and well as practical aspects of the problem, including up-to-date methods of calculation and stability improvement. When preparing the text, they have assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge (but not above graduate level) of network theory, matrix algebra and control theory. The book combines the simplicity and transparency of the classic stability principles with the advantages of modern treatment based on system theory and state-space techniques. Theoretical passages are always accompanied by analog or digital computer study results. Detailed analysis is given of voltage regulator and field governor effects as far as they influence the steady-state and/or transient stability of generating units. This is the first book in the field to treat in detail the stability questions of long distance, EHV power interconnections. In view of increasing precision requirements, the usefulness of different simplified stability models is widely dealt with.
