Smooth Tests of Goodness of Fit

Smooth Tests of Goodness of Fit PDF Author: J. C. W. Rayner
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470824433
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
In this fully revised and expanded edition of Smooth Tests of Goodness of Fit, the latest powerful techniques for assessing statistical and probabilistic models using this proven class of procedures are presented in a practical and easily accessible manner. Emphasis is placed on modern developments such as data-driven tests, diagnostic properties, and model selection techniques. Applicable to most statistical distributions, the methodology described in this book is optimal for deriving tests of fit for new distributions and complex probabilistic models, and is a standard against which new procedures should be compared. New features of the second edition include: Expansion of the methodology to cover virtually any statistical distribution, including exponential families Discussion and application of data-driven smooth tests Techniques for the selection of the best model for the data, with a guide to acceptable alternatives Numerous new, revised, and expanded examples, generated using R code Smooth Tests of Goodness of Fit is an invaluable resource for all methodological researchers as well as graduate students undertaking goodness-of-fit, statistical, and probabilistic model assessment courses. Practitioners wishing to make an informed choice of goodness-of-fit test will also find this book an indispensible guide. Reviews of the first edition: "This book gives a very readable account of the smooth tests of goodness of fit. The book can be read by scientists having only an introductory knowledge of statistics. It contains a fairly extensive list of references; research will find it helpful for the further development of smooth tests." --T.K. Chandra, Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete, Band 73, 1/92' "An excellent job of showing how smooth tests (a class of goodness of fit tests) are generally and easily applicable in assessing the validity of models involving statistical distributions....Highly recommended for undergraduate and graduate libraries." --Choice "The book can be read by scientists having only an introductory knowledge of statistics. It contains a fairly extensive list of references; researchers will find it helpful for the further development of smooth tests."--Mathematical Reviews "Very rich in examples . . . Should find its way to the desks of many statisticians." --Technometrics

Robustness of Statistical Methods and Nonparametric Statistics

Robustness of Statistical Methods and Nonparametric Statistics PDF Author: Dieter Rasch
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400965281
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
This volume contains most of the invited and contributed papers presented at the Conference on Robustness of Statistical Methods and Nonparametric Statistics held in the castle oj'Schwerin, Mai 29 - June 4 1983. This conference was organized by the Mathematical Society of the GDR in cooperation with the Society of Physical and Mathematical Biology of the GDR, the GDR-Region of the International Biometric Society and the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR. All papers included were thoroughly reviewed by scientist listed under the heading "Editorial Collabora tories·'. Some contributions, we are sorry to report, were not recommended for publi cation by the rf'vif'wers and do not appear in these proceedings. The editors thank the reviewers for their valuable comments and suggestions. The conference was organizf'd bv a Programme Committee, its chairman was Prof. Dr. Dieter Rasch (Research Centre of Animal Production, Dummerstorf-Rostock). The members of the Programme Committee were Prof. Dr., Johannes Adam (Martin-Luther-University Halle) Prof. Dr. Heinz Ahrens (Academy of Sciences of the GDR, Berlin) Doz. Dr. Jana Jureckova (Charles University Praha) Prof. Dr. Moti Lal Tiku (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario) The aim of the conference was to discuss several aspects of robustness but mainly to present new results regarding the robustness of classical statistical methods especially tests, confidence estimations, and selection procedures, and to compare their perfor mance with nonparametric procedures. Robustness in this sens~ is understood as intensivity against. violation of the normal assumption.

Book Description
Interface '90 is the continuation of an ext!remely successful symposium series. The series has provided a forum for the interaction of professionals in statistics, computing science, and in numerical methods, wherein they may discuss a wide range of topics at the interface of these disciplines. This, the 22nd Symposium on the Interface: Computing Science and Statistics, was held 16-19 May, 1990 at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University and is the third Symposium to be held under the recently organized Interface Foundation of North America. The Interface Board of Directors consists of the nine most recent Symposium Chairs: James E. Gentle, Lynne Billard, David M. Allen, Thomas J. Boardman, Richard M. Heiberger, Edward J. Wegman, Linda Malone, Raoul LePage, and Jon Kettenring. The officers of the Interface are William Eddy, Board Chairman and Executive Director; Edward Wegman, President and Treasurer; Lynne Billard, Secretary. My valued colleague Connie Page, Editor of this Proceedings Volume and generally bright and hardworking person, has organizational skills of a higher order which were successfully brought into play during many critical junctures not strictly connected with the Proceedings. Edward Wegman, Barbara Barringer, Bill Eddy, and George Styan all pitched in with useful information on numerous occasions. Our Keynote Speaker, Peter G. Hall and Plenary Speakers David L. Donoho, Jerome H. Friedman (who also gave a short course), Bruce Hajek, John Skilling, and C. F.

What Works in Foster Care?

What Works in Foster Care? PDF Author: Peter J. Pecora
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199721122
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
On any given day, nearly half a million children are served by foster care services in the U.S. at an annual cost of over $25 billion. Growing demand and shrinking funds have so greatly stressed the child welfare system that calls for orphanages have re-entered the public debate for the first time in nearly half a century. New ideas are desperately needed to transform a system in crisis, guarantee better outcomes for children in foster care, and reduce the need for out-of-home care in the first place. Yet little is known about what works in foster care. Very few studies have examined how alumni have fared as adults or tracked long-term health effects, and even fewer have directly compared different foster care services. In one of the most comprehensive studies of adults formerly in foster care ever conducted, the Northwest Foster Care Alumni Study found that quality foster care services for children pay big dividends when they grow into adults. Key investments in highly trained staff, low caseloads, and robust supplementary services can dramatically reduce the rates of mental disorders and substance abuse later in life and increase the likelihood of completing education beyond high school and remaining employed. The results of this unparalleled study document not only the more favorable outcomes for youth who receive better services but the overall return when an investment is made in high quality foster care: every dollar invested in a child generates $1.50 in benefits to society. These findings form the core of this book's blueprint for reform. By keeping more children with their families and investing additional funds in enhanced foster care services, child welfare agencies have the opportunity to greatly improve the health, well being, and economic prospects for foster care alumni. What Works in Foster Care? presents a model foster care program that promises to revolutionize the way policymakers, administrators, case workers, and researchers think about protecting our most vulnerable youth.
