Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Signs & Serendipity A Love Series Novella Some signs are written in the stars. Some call it fate and others call it destiny, but love can be found in the most unexpected places and with the least likely person. Everyone saw him as a shy, nerdy, somewhat awkward guy - not much of a ladies' man. She was stereotyped as an intellectually challenged glamazon who depended on her looks to get through life. The first time he saw her he swore it was love; he couldn't explain it logically. When they met by chance, sparks flew. Having never exchanged names, they agreed to test the theory that it was a sign and not just serendipity. They planned to meet a year later with only her phone number as his link to reconnect. Sometimes fate has other ideas. Her number unexpectedly goes lost and he has no way to find her but they never forget each other - even as the years pass. In a world where science is the only truth and love is just a fantasy, two young people set out to prove it wrong.

Serendipity

Serendipity PDF Author: James A. Estes
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520377494
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
"Many of the findings in the book . . . are classics of ecology. . . . A rare and delightful insight into timely science."—Jane Lubchenco, Nature "Estes's refreshing narrative deftly weaves rigorous science with personal reflection to create an absorbing and introspective read that is equal parts memoir, ecological textbook, and motivational guidebook for young ecologists."—Science To newly minted biologist James Estes, the sea otters he was studying in the leafy kelp forests off the coast of Alaska appeared to have an unbalanced relationship with their greater environment. Gorging themselves on the sea urchins that grazed among the kelp, these small charismatic mammals seemed to give little back in return. But as Estes dug deeper, he unearthed a far more complex relationship between the otter and its underwater environment, discovering that otters play a critical role in driving positive ecosystem dynamics. While teasing out the connective threads, he began to question our assumptions about ecological relationships. These questions would ultimately inspire a lifelong quest to better understand the surprising complexity of our natural world and the unexpected ways we discover it. Serendipity tells the story of James Estes’s life as a naturalist and the concepts that have driven his interest in researching the ecological role of top-level predators. Using the relationships between sea otters, kelp, and sea urchins as a touchstone, Estes retraces his investigations of numerous other species, ecosystems, and ecological processes in an attempt to discover why ecologists can learn so many details about the systems in which they work and yet understand so little about the broader processes that influence these systems. Part memoir, part natural history, and deeply inquisitive, Serendipity will entertain and inform readers as it raises thoughtful questions about our relationship with the natural world.

Dark Companions of Stars

Dark Companions of Stars PDF Author: P. Kamp
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400946929
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 117

Book Description
If you want to understand the invisible, look careful at the visible. The Talmud A 'bird's eye' or rather a distant spacecraft's view of the solar system reveals an assembly of planets, terrestrial, giant and Pluto. The orbital motions are in the same sense, counter clockwise, as seen from the north of the general flattened space within which the planetary motions are confined. This state of affairs is corevolving and, more or less, coplanar. The rotations are in the same sense as the revolutions, with the strikiiig exception of Uranus whose sense of rotation is perpendicular to its plane of revolution. As time goes by, most of the planets remain fairly close to a general plane and at no time stray unduly far from it; they remain confined within a rather narrow box or disk with a large 'equatorial' extent. The most distant planet, Pluto, requires a diameter of some 80 astronomical units for the disk. One astronomical unit is the distance of the Earth to the Sun, to be more precise the length of half the major axis of the Earth's slightly elliptical orbit around the Sun, and amounts to nearly 149600000 km.
