Spectral Line Broadening by Plasmas

Spectral Line Broadening by Plasmas PDF Author: Hans Griem
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323150942
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Spectral Line Broadening by Plasmas deals with spectral line broadening by plasmas and covers topics ranging from quasi-static approximation and impact approximation to intermediate approximations and correlation effects. Experimental results for hydrogen lines, lines with forbidden components, and ionized helium lines are presented. Applications such as density and temperature measurements are also considered. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of electric fields from electrons and ions (both acting as point charges) on spectral line shapes. The next chapter surveys theoretical work, paying particular attention to quasi-static, impact, and intermediate approximations as well as correlation effects. Stark broadening experiments are then discussed, with special emphasis on experiments capable of checking the accuracy or validity limits of the various approximations. The final chapter is devoted to applications in laboratory plasma physics and astronomy, focusing on density and temperature measurements and opacity calculations as well as the analysis of stellar atmospheres, amplitudes and spectra of plasma waves, and radio frequency lines. This book should appeal to students, practitioners, and researchers in pure and applied physics.

Stark Broadening of Spectral Lines in Plasmas

Stark Broadening of Spectral Lines in Plasmas PDF Author: Eugene Oks
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783038974567
Category : Electronic books
Languages : en
Pages : 1

Book Description
Experimental and theoretical studies of Stark broadening of spectral lines in plasmas are the cornerstone of a large number of spectroscopic diagnostics of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. As such, they are very important both fundamentally and practically, the latter being due to the numerous practical applications of plasmas. Examples are studies dealing with: controlled thermonuclear fusion (that would provide a virtually unlimited source of energy), plasma-based lasers for medical and other purposes, technological microwave discharges (especially those used for manufacturing microchips), a better understanding of solar activity, other astrophysical objects (white dwarfs, flare stars, and so on). The book reviews advances in this area achieved in recent years and presents new original papers building on these advances.

Stark Broadening of Heavy Ion Spectral Lines with Some Astrophysical Applications

Stark Broadening of Heavy Ion Spectral Lines with Some Astrophysical Applications PDF Author: Zlatko Majlinger
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Stark broadening is dominant mechanism of broadening for spectral lines in high-energy plasma. This book focuses on research of stellar plasma, although the results can be used in a study of laboratory plasma as well. Importance of Stark broadening of spectral lines for analysis, interpretation and synthesis of the star spectra, diagnostics, analysis and modeling of stellar plasma is considered as well as the significance of these results for research laboratory, fusion and technological plasma or laser physics. The aim is to determine the previously unknown Stark broadening parameters of the spectral lines of transition metals and lanthanides that do not exist in the literature yet, neither measured by laboratory methods nor theoretically determined, for single electrically charged ions (Co II), double electrically charged ions (Lu III), and triple electrically charged ions (Zr IV), in order to study the impact of line broadening on spectra of hot stars and white dwarfs.

Introduction to Plasma Spectroscopy

Introduction to Plasma Spectroscopy PDF Author: Hans-Joachim Kunze
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642022332
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Although based on lectures given for graduate students and postgraduates starting in plasma physics, this concise introduction to the fundamental processes and tools is as well directed at established researchers who are newcomers to spectroscopy and seek quick access to the diagnostics of plasmas ranging from low- to high-density technical systems at low temperatures, as well as from low- to high-density hot plasmas. Basic ideas and fundamental concepts are introduced as well as typical instrumentation from the X-ray to the infrared spectral regions. Examples, techniques and methods illustrate the possibilities. This book directly addresses the experimentalist who actually has to carry out the experiments and their interpretation. For that reason about half of the book is devoted to experimental problems, the instrumentation, components, detectors and calibration.

Spectral Line Shapes in Astrophysics and Related Topics

Spectral Line Shapes in Astrophysics and Related Topics PDF Author: Milan S. Dimitrijević
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039281682
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
Spectral lines, widths, and shapes are powerful tools for emitting/absorbing gas diagnostics in different astrophysical objects (from the solar system to the most distant objects in the universe—quasars). On the other hand, experimental and theoretical investigations of laboratory plasma have been applied in spectroscopic astrophysical research, especially in research on atomic data needed for line shape calculations. Data on spectral lines and their profiles are also important for diagnostics, analysis, and the modelling of fusion plasma, laser-produced plasma, laser design and development, and various plasmas in industry and technology, like light sources based on plasmas or the welding and piercing of metals by laser-produced plasma. The papers from this book can be divided into four groups: 1. stark broadening data for astrophysical and laboratory plasma investigations; 2. applications of spectral lines for astrophysical and laboratory plasma research; 3. spectral line phenomena in extragalactic objects, and 4. laboratory astrophysics results for spectra investigation. The reviews and research papers, representing new research on the topics presented in this book, are of interest for specialists and PhD students. We hope that the present book will be useful and interesting for scientists interested in the investigation of spectral line shapes and will contribute to the education of young researchers and PhD students.

Diagnostics Of Laboratory And Astrophysical Plasmas Using Spectral Lineshapes Of One-, Two-, And Three-electron Systems

Diagnostics Of Laboratory And Astrophysical Plasmas Using Spectral Lineshapes Of One-, Two-, And Three-electron Systems PDF Author: Oks Eugene
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814699098
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
The book presents an advanced tool for experimentalists using spectral lineshapes for diagnostics of laboratory or astrophysical plasmas, and for theorists helping the experimentalists in interpreting the experimental line profiles. It significantly expands the scope of parameters of plasmas and/or fields in it that can be measured. For some parameters, the book presents new, more advanced diagnostic methods than the methods covered in the previous books.
