Standard Test Method for Crack-Tip Opening Displacement CTOD Fracture Toughness Measurement
ASTM E1290-07 El Standard Test Method for Crack-tip Opening Displacement ( CTOD) Fracture Toughness Measurement
Dynamic Crack-Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Measurements with Application to Fracture Toughness Testing
Author: JM. Shapiro
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crack-tip opening displacement
Languages : en
Pages : 16
Book Description
Crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) measurements were made 100 üm behind the crack tip on standard three-point bend specimens using a laser-based interferometric technique. Four materials (SAE-01 steel, 4340 steel, HY-100 steel, and tungsten) were tested at loading rates ranging from quasi-static (K ? 1 MPa• m1⁄2/s) to dynamic (K ? 106 MPa • m1⁄2/s).

Fracture Toughness Testing

ISBN:
Category : Fracture mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.

Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Toughness Evaluation by ASTM E 1290 and BS5762

Category : Crack size
Languages : en
Pages : 7
Book Description
ASTM Committee E-24 on Fracture has recently standardized the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) measurement method. Three major differences between the ASTM E 1290-89 method and British Standard BS5762:1979 are outlined, and the influence of these differences on the critical crack initiation CTOD value is studied. The study is based on a typical fatigue crack and slow crack growth front profile. A difference of up to 6% in the CTOD values between the two standards, irrespective of the slow crack growth size, was found in the present study. However, a marginal ditterence of only 2% in the initiation CTOD value could be observed for the slow crack growth situation considered.

Engineering Aspects of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement Fracture Toughness Testing
Author: ST. Rolfe
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Cracks
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
An investigation of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) fracture behavior of four pressure vessel steels and one ship steel has been conducted. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the fracture behavior of the steels, to study the effects of CTOD testing variables, to examine various methods of evaluating test records, and to study the relationships among several fracture toughness parameters. The five steels studied, A508, A533, A516, A517, and A131, (Unified Numbering System [UNS] K12766, K12539, K02700, K11856, and K02102) had yield strengths from 240 to 750 MPa. In addition, three specimen sizes of the A533 and A516 steels were studied.

R-Curve Generation and CTOD Evaluation Considering Maximum Crack Growth Size and Parabolic Crack Front

Category : Area measurement
Languages : en
Pages : 10
Book Description
The standard methods of estimating the average size of the slow crack growth region as described in BS 5762 (Crack Opening Displacement (COD)) and ASTM E 1290 (Test Method for Crack-Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Fracture Toughness Measurement) are cumbersome, painstaking, time consuming, and dependent on several factors; e.g., section thickness, the nature of crack front profile, and the number of measurements. Often errors are introduced in determining the average crack size which in turn affect the determination of critical CTOD value.
