Sacred Sites, Sacred Places
Author: David L. Carmichael
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135633274
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
Sacred Sites, Sacred Places explores the concept of 'sacred' and what it means and implies to people in differing cultures. It looks at why people regard some parts of the land as special and why this ascription remains constant in some cultures and changes in others. Archaeologists, legislators and those involved in heritage management sometimes encounter conflict with local populations over sacred sites. With the aid of over 70 illustrations the book examines the extreme importance of such sacred places in all cultures and the necessity of accommodating those intimate beliefs which are such a vital part of ongoing cultural identity. Sacred Sites, Sacred Places therefore will be of help to those who wish to be non-destructive in their conservation and excavation practices. This book is unique in attempting to describe the belief systems surrounding the existence of sacred sites, and at the same time bringing such beliefs and practices into relationship with the practical problems of everyday heritage management. The geographical coverage of the book is exceptionally wide and its variety of contributors, including indigenous peoples, archaeologists and heritage professionals, is unrivalled in any other publication.

Book Description
"The Church is a great big story - I don't know if I can remember everything. When I was a little kid, I used to have to sit still at my grandmother's seat, you know. That's how I used to have to listen." Elder Margaret Ann Peters and many other community members tell their stories about how their grandfathers built the Church of the Holy Cross at Skookumchuck, and what it has meant to the community over the past 100 years. The building is a remarkable achievement, by a remarkable people. It continues to serve as a spiritual centre for their descendants in this isolated river-valley in south-western BC. In 1981, the Canadian government recognized it as a national historic site, and in 2006 are erecting a commemorative plaque, which reads: Completed about 1905 by members of the Stl'atl'imx Nation, the Church of the Holy Cross is remarkable for the beauty and originality of its interior decoration. The craftsmanship of the cedar sculptures, altar, pews and grave markers of this wooden Carpenter Gothic-style building attests to the exceptional skills of the local artisans. The corner towers, rose window, three spires and arched windows also contribute to the distinctive character of this "cathedral in the wilderness." Spirit in Community tells the story of the building and the people D in their own words and through the many family photographs of baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and special family events.
