Spiritual Profiling PDF Author: Thomas O. Hovestol

Book Description
Jesus’ world was far more religiously pluralistic than most of us imagine. He grew up and headquartered His ministry in “Galilee of the Gentiles.” He regularly rubbed shoulders with polytheistic and superstitious Romans, with philosophical and sophisticated Greeks, with hard-partying pagans, and with God-fearing Africans. The Bible tells us that Jesus, unlike His fellow countrymen, did not avoid the despised and syncretistic Samaritans. Nor did Jesus shun the Jews who were considered persona non grata in the local synagogues, like those who worked for the occupying government, or who rejected Hebrew ways in favor of Greek, or who lived hellion lifestyles. Moreover, Jesus interacted with individuals representing all of the major sects of Judaism--Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots, and Essenes. And these included a huge variety of spiritual expression from the emotional to the contemplative, from the spontaneous to the staid, from Bible-thumpers to compassion-lovers, from those who push religion to the four corners of their lives while others passionately seek to push it to the four corners of the globe. Is there some way to categorize, organize and understand the varieties of spiritual expression that Jesus encountered? Is it possible that the kinds of people Jesus dealt with in His day are similar to the ones we face today? Are there prototypical and stereotypical religious patterns to which people gravitate? And why do we do so? If we lived in Jesus’ day, what spiritual “camp” would be most like ours? How would Jesus approach us? What would he do with us? What would our Spiritual Profile be?

ISBN: 9780195082401
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Moses, Joan of Arc, Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), and other religious figures such as Pope John XXIII, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu, and Mother Teresa. Each person's life story focuses on historical context, major events, and accomplishments, but Goldman is careful not to make her subjects mere cardboard paragons of virtue. Each is a real human being who lived and breathed and left a mark on our world. Photographs, engravings, and drawings are included with each profile, and a quick reference fact box lists birth and death dates, religious tradition, and major achievements. An introductory essay addresses why each subject was chosen and explores the origins of religions. Suggestions for further reading, and a complete index add to this unique and fascinating reference. Ideal for multicultural, ethical, and comparative religion studies, Believers is also an excellent supplement to world history texts.

Musings of a Christian Physician on the Physical and Spiritual Healing of Man

Musings of a Christian Physician on the Physical and Spiritual Healing of Man PDF Author: Joseph DeMay MD FAAP
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1973691086
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
I had always believed in the healing power of our Lord, and viewed my life as one of service to Him via the practice of medicine. But, in retrospect, I had a deeper trust in the power of modern medicine and science than I did in Jesus Christ and His fully accomplished work on the Cross. My thinking was flawed, but, as I grew in my walk with the Lord and meditated on Scripture more fully, I began to see the superiority of faith over the limited interventions modern medical science had to offer, and that this interplay between faith and science was not mutually exclusive, but complimentary, for the spiritual aspects of our lives illuminate and empower the carnal aspects of intellect and physical senses. I began jotting notes to myself related to this interplay of faith and healing and science, and just filed them away...for years. IThen, in December of 2017, a baby was born to a first time mother of mine, his little body riddled with the most fulminant form of acute lymphoblasic leukemia, almost always fatal. His absolutely miraculous healing was the impetus to start putting these thoughts into writing, in the form of weekday morning emails entitled “A Christian Doctor’s View of Healing, Faiith, and Science”. It was soon made clear to me that these writings were to take the form of a year long devotional book, comprised of short weekday messages that are intimately linked, such that they can be read through as a book. And that book was to paint a picture, and that picture was to be of a face, and the face was to be that of Jesus, for He is the source of all healing

This system of self-discovery encompasses five distinct soul-based profiles. Which one are you? - Creative Idealists are highly imaginative thinkers who sometimes self-isolate, feeling safer staying in their inner mental world than engaging with others. - Emotional Intelligence Specialists are empathic, sensitive, and compassionate but sometimes struggle with being overwhelmed and feeling unloved. - Team Players are loyal supporters who selflessly put others’ needs before their own, but they can fail to recognize their own strengths and needs. - Charismatic Leader-Charmers are energetic, dynamic, and capable, but they can become distrustful, self-centered, and even aggressive, in their relationships. - Knowledgeable Achievers are driven, self-disciplined, and organized big-picture thinkers. Finding a Spiritual Home

Finding a Spiritual Home PDF Author: Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, PhD
Publisher: Turner Publishing Company
ISBN: 158023657X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
The Jewish community has lost some of the most sensitive spiritual souls of this generation. They are Jews who were looking for God and found spiritual homes outside of Judaism. Their journeys traversed the Jewish community, but nothing there beckoned them. The creation of synagogue-communities in which the voices of seekers can be heard and their questions can be asked will challenge many loyalist Jews. It will upset and enrage them. But it would also enrich them. —from Chapter 18 In this fresh look at the spiritual possibilities of American Jewish life, Rabbi Sidney Schwarz presents the framework for a new synagogue model—the synagogue community—and its promise to transform our understanding of the synagogue and its potential for modern Judaism. Schwarz profiles four innovative synagogues—one from each of the major movements of Judaism—that have had extraordinary success with their approach to congregational life and presents practical ways to replicate their success. Includes a discussion guide for study groups and book clubs as well as a new afterword by the author describing developments in synagogue change projects since the book was first published.
