The Spiritual Guide

The Spiritual Guide PDF Author: Miguel de Molinos
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 9780809146505
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated, and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. Miguel de Molinos (c. 1628-1696) was one of the most important figures in the religious controversy known as Quietism. Spanish by birth, he spent nearly his entire adult life in Rome, where he attracted wide fame as a spiritual director and gained the favor of several prominent figures. His Spiritual Guide (1675) recommended a life of spiritual simplicity and promoted what became known as the prayer of quiet. On publication it was an immediate bestseller, but the Guide's fame came to an abrupt end in 1685 when Molinos was accused of heresy and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in prison in 1696. This Classics of Western Spirituality edition of the Spiritual Guide was translated from the new critical edition of José Ignacio Tellechea Idígoras. It provides an unabridged translation in modern English along with a historical introduction by the translator and a theological introduction by the eminent scholar Bernard McGinn. Book jacket.

The Cambridge Companion to Christian Mysticism

The Cambridge Companion to Christian Mysticism PDF Author: Amy Hollywood
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110749527X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 403

Book Description
The Cambridge Companion to Christian Mysticism is a multi-authored interdisciplinary guide to the study of Christian mysticism, with an emphasis on the third through the seventeenth centuries. The book is thematically organized in terms of the central contexts, practices and concepts associated with the mystical life in early, medieval and early modern Christianity. This book looks beyond the term 'mysticism', which was an early modern invention, to explore the ways in which the ancient terms 'mystic' and 'mystical' were used in the Christian tradition: what kinds of practices, modes of life and experiences were described as 'mystical'? What understanding of Christianity and of the life of Christian perfection is articulated through mystical interpretations of scripture, mystical contemplation, mystical vision, mystical theology or mystical union? This volume both provides a clear introduction to the Christian mystical life and articulates a bold new approach to the study of mysticism.

Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed

Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed PDF Author: Philip Sheldrake
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1441157166
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
'Spirituality' is a word that is used increasingly these days yet it is often ill-defined. What exactly is spirituality? Is it distinct from religion and can we separate it from beliefs and traditions? Does spirituality mainly focus on spiritual experiences and practices or is it something more? This book suggests that, while there may be common features in the use of the word, 'spirituality' is not a single reality. Different 'spiritualities' reflect particular religious or philosophical viewpoints, as well as the cultural contexts in which they arise and develop. Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed provides students and general readers with a reliable and comprehensive guide to 'spirituality' as an area of study, religiously, historically, philosophically and in the social sciences. It explores the tools that are used to study the subject and to interpret spiritual classics (whether these are written texts or other forms such as art) from different times and cultures. Attention is paid to spirituality in a variety of religious and non-religious forms in their own terms and comparatively. However, for the sake of simplicity greatest attention is given to the study of spirituality within a religious perspective with illustrations drawn from texts, personalities and themes associated with five major world religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. The book concludes with an exploration of spirituality in contemporary perspective - in particular how spirituality is currently employed in areas such as health-care, education and business among other examples.

Cambridge Platonist Spirituality

Cambridge Platonist Spirituality PDF Author: Charles Taliaferro
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 9780809105397
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
This anthology collects essays, poetry and treatises by a group of English philosophers from the Age of Reason who were devoted to the goodness of God and the spiritual importance of rationalism. These philosophers, known as the Cambridge Platonists, produced a movement in philosophical theology that flourished around Cambridge University in the seventeenth century and influenced not only Great Britain, but the United States and beyond. Their school of thought emphasized the great goodness of God, the compatibility of reason and faith, an integrated life of virtue, and the deep joy of living in concord with God. This volume introduces and presents the key documents of the Cambridge Platonist movement while setting its thinkers in their historical and religious context: the decades of turbulence and political crises surrounding the English Civil War.
