Book Description
"Staying here tonight. A beautiful motel as most of them are and there are so many." So wrote a traveler spending a night at a motel between Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia writing home on the motel's postcard in 1955. U.S. Highway 1, before the arrival of Interstate 95, was considered America's Main Street, the most heavily traveled highway on the east coast, running from the Canadian border in Maine to Key West, Florida. In 2010, Highway 1 was designated an Historic Highway. The stretch of highway between Richmond and Petersburg, long known locally as the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike, or "Pike" for short, was an important stopover for tourists driving to and from Florida and the number, and variety, of travel accommodations attest to the Pike's popularity. Using over 160 postcards along with over 55 other images including some provided by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the Chesterfield County Historical Society, the book provides a history of motels, tourist courts, tourist camps, etc. that flourished along Historic Highway 1 from 1920 to 1975. But Spending the Night on the Pike is not a history of postcards. It is a history of what postcards tell us about travelers in the first half of the 20th century and of the evolution of the lodging that accommodated them. For many tourist courts and motels, postcards are the only record remaining of these once vibrant businesses and are the source of clues that help identify buildings that still remain but are hidden or disguised. For those motels still operating, their postcards give us a glimpse of their former glory, when they were new and polished, before the arrival of the interstates that siphoned off the tourist business. And they tell of the time when motels were family-owned “Mom and Pop's” and proudly advertised that fact on their postcards. It is also a nostalgic look back for those who remember the time when road trips required driving through towns instead of around them and of a time that seems less complicated, less stressful, and less rushed. And for those who take the time to look, the motels, tourist courts, and tourist cabins still standing provide us a reminder of that earlier time.

Dag Pike's Cruising Under Power
Author: Dag Pike
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1408159325
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
The aim of this book is to enable novices to cruise safely and enjoyably. It will cover the preparations needed before undertaking a cruise, operating the boat under different and sometimes challenging conditions, how to cope when things go wrong, how to conform to the rules and regulations, and how to navigate. It conveys the advice and information just as the cruiser will encounter it on passage - from setting off to arriving at their destination (rather than compartmentalised into navigation/weather/engine etc). Topics include: Preparing to cruise (weather forecasts, route planning, checklists); Leaving harbour (harbour entrances, radio contact, setting courses and speeds, crew briefing, food and drink); Assessing weather and sea conditions (fine tuning plans); Watch keeping under way (visual and electronic navigation, coping with alarms); Entering harbour (planning ahead, radio channels, finding an anchorage, speeds); Cruising at night and in fog (lights, radar, shipping lanes, stopping distance); Adventurous cruising (navigating inshore, beach landing, hidden dangers); Fuel management and economy (economical speeds, boat trim, reserves); Comfort on board (cooking and sleeping at sea, security); When things go wrong (potential problems, safety equipment, coping with fire, leaks, grounding, engine problems, calling for help); Rules and regulations (collision regulations, traffic lanes, going foreign, qualifications). Aimed at owners of powerboats and motor cruisers between 25 and 65ft, the book will be entirely practical, with checklists, sidebars and box-outs and many diagrams and photos.

On War and Leadership
Author: Michael Owen Connelly
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400825164
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
What can we learn about leadership and the experience of war from the best combat leaders the world has ever known? This book takes us behind the scenes and to the front lines of the major wars of the past 250 years through the words of twenty combat commanders. What they have to say--which is remarkably similar across generational, national, and ideological divides--is a fascinating take on military history by those who lived it. It is also worthwhile reading for anyone, from any walk of life, who makes executive decisions. The leaders showcased here range from Frederick the Great to Norman Schwarzkopf. They include such diverse figures as Napoleon Bonaparte, commanders on both sides of the Civil War (William Tecumseh Sherman and Stonewall Jackson), German and American World War II generals (Rommel and Patton), a veteran of the Arab-Israeli wars (Moshe Dayan), and leaders from both sides of the Vietnam War (Vo Nguyen Giap and Harold Moore). What they have had in common is an unrivaled understanding of the art of command and a willingness to lead from the front. All earned the respect and loyalty of those they led--and moved them to risk death. The practices of these commanders apply to any leadership situation, whether military, business, political, athletic, or other. Their words reveal techniques for anticipating the competition, leading through example, taking care of the "troops," staying informed, turning bad luck to advantage, improvising, and making bold decisions. Leader after leader emphasizes the importance of up-front "muddy boots" leadership and reveals what it takes to persevere and win. Identifying a pattern of proven leadership, this book will benefit anyone who aspires to lead a country, a squadron, a company, or a basketball team. It is a unique distillation of two and a half centuries of military wisdom.

Zebulon Pike
Author: George R. Matthews
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440844321
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Through careful examination of primary documents, this book reveals that the true purpose of Zebulon Pike's western expedition in 1806–1807 was not innocent exploration of the West but an espionage mission in preparation for an American invasion of New Mexico. In 1806, the United States was on the brink of war with Spain over the disputed western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase and anticipated invading New Mexico. Possessing only meager information on the terrain as well as Spanish troop numbers and fortifications, President Thomas Jefferson and General James Wilkinson needed an agent who could cross the continent to Spanish territory all the way to the capital of Santa Fe, provide a plausible "cover story" for being there, and return with the vital information. Zebulon Pike: Thomas Jefferson's Agent for Empire is the story of how Pike carried out his mission as a prelude to an American invasion of New Mexico. This unique book is the first to fully chronicle Pike's 1806–1807 expedition to the Rocky Mountains and beyond, addressing both the exploratory and the clandestine purposes of Pike's western journey. By carefully examining the evidence available in primary documents, which shows that Pike prepared and carried a map showing a route to Santa Fe on his journey, the author overturns the conventional wisdom that Pike became lost searching for the Red River and mistakenly wandered into Spanish territory. This book also presents the Spanish perspective and response to Pike's invasion of Spanish territory and provides historical context to understand the role of Pike's expedition in Thomas Jefferson's quest to build an American "empire for liberty."

The Forgotten Kingdom
Author: Signe Pike
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1501191470
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 512
Book Description
From the author of The Lost Queen, hailed as “Outlander meets Camelot” (Kirsty Logan, the author of The Gloaming) and “The Mists of Avalon for a new generation” (Linnea Hartsuyker, the author of The Golden Wolf), a “rich, immersive” (Kirkus Reviews) new novel in which a forgotten queen of 6th-century Scotland claims her throne as war looms and her family is scattered to the winds. AD 573. Imprisoned in her chamber, Languoreth awaits news in torment. Her husband and son have ridden off to war against her brother, Lailoken. She doesn’t yet know that her young daughter, Angharad, who was training with Lailoken to become a Wisdom Keeper, has been lost in the chaos. As one of the bloodiest battles of early medieval Scottish history abandons its survivors to the wilds of Scotland, Lailoken and his men must flee to exile in the mountains of the Lowlands, while nine-year-old Angharad must summon all Lailoken has taught her to follow her own destiny through the mysterious, mystical land of the Picts. In the aftermath of the battle, old political alliances unravel, opening the way for the ambitious adherents of the new religion: Christianity. Lailoken is half-mad with battle sickness, and Languoreth must hide her allegiance to the Old Way to survive her marriage to the next Christian king of Strathclyde. Worst yet, the new King of the Angles is bent on expanding his kingdom at any cost. Now the exiled Lailoken, with the help of a young warrior named Artur, may be the only man who can bring the warring groups together to defeat the encroaching Angles. But to do so, he must claim the role that will forever transform him. He must become the man known to history as “Myrddin.” “Intrigue, rivalry, and magic among the mists of old Britain—The Forgotten Kingdom is an enchantment of a read” (Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network).
