Excerpt from Special Rules and Regulations for the Government of the Police: Adopted April 10, 1865 Officers and members of the watch, when on duty, may carry a club of not more than eighteen inches in length; shall wear such badge of othee as the mayor or selectmen may direct, and shall walk the rounds in and about the streets, lanes, and wharves of the city and town, to prevent danger by fire, and to see that good order is kept. Section 33, chap. 165, provides that a person found on a street, highway, or other public place, in the night-time, committing any of the offences or dis orders previously mentioned in that chapter, may be apprehended by any sherifi', deputy sheriff. Constit ble, or watchman, or by any other person by the order of any magistrate or either of said officers, without a written warrant, and kept in custody in 3 convenient place, not more than twenty-four hours, Sundays excepted, at or before the expiration Of which time, he shall be brought before a justice Ofthe peace or police court, to be proceeded against or discharged as such magistrate shall determine.
