EuroWordNet: A multilingual database with lexical semantic networks PDF Author: Piek Vossen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401714916
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
This book describes the main objective of EuroWordNet, which is the building of a multilingual database with lexical semantic networks or wordnets for several European languages. Each wordnet in the database represents a language-specific structure due to the unique lexicalization of concepts in languages. The concepts are inter-linked via a separate Inter-Lingual-Index, where equivalent concepts across languages should share the same index item. The flexible multilingual design of the database makes it possible to compare the lexicalizations and semantic structures, revealing answers to fundamental linguistic and philosophical questions which could never be answered before. How consistent are lexical semantic networks across languages, what are the language-specific differences of these networks, is there a language-universal ontology, how much information can be shared across languages? First attempts to answer these questions are given in the form of a set of shared or common Base Concepts that has been derived from the separate wordnets and their classification by a language-neutral top-ontology. These Base Concepts play a fundamental role in several wordnets. Nevertheless, the database may also serve many practical needs with respect to (cross-language) information retrieval, machine translation tools, language generation tools and language learning tools, which are discussed in the final chapter. The book offers an excellent introduction to the EuroWordNet project for scholars in the field and raises many issues that set the directions for further research in semantics and knowledge engineering.

Linguistics Today – Facing a Greater Challenge

Linguistics Today – Facing a Greater Challenge PDF Author: Piet van Sterkenburg
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 902729514X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
Every five years the Permanent International Committee of Linguists (CIPL) organises a world congress for linguists. And every five years the Committee faces the challenge of presenting a programme at the highest possible level. The CIPL Executive Committee decided for the Congress planned for 2003 in Prague to focus on four major topics which play an important role in today’s linguistic debate: 1. Typology, 2. Endangered Languages, 3. Methodology and Linguistics (including fieldwork) and 4. Language and the mind. Leading experts have introduced the four themes in their plenary lectures in the course of the congress, which served as a basis for the articles presented in the current volume. This book should be a welcome tool for all linguists wishing to find their way quickly in current developments. A CD-Rom containing the full proceedings of the Prague Congress is included.

Handbook on Ontologies

Handbook on Ontologies PDF Author: Steffen Staab
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540247505
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 661

Book Description
An ontology is a description (like a formal specification of a program) of concepts and relationships that can exist for an agent or a community of agents. The concept is important for the purpose of enabling knowledge sharing and reuse. The Handbook on Ontologies provides a comprehensive overview of the current status and future prospectives of the field of ontologies. The handbook demonstrates standards that have been created recently, it surveys methods that have been developed and it shows how to bring both into practice of ontology infrastructures and applications that are the best of their kind.

Multilingual FrameNets in Computational Lexicography

Multilingual FrameNets in Computational Lexicography PDF Author: Hans C. Boas
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110212978
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This book demonstrates how the underlying principles of the English-based FrameNet project are successfully applied to the description and analysis of typologically diverse languages. The stimulating collection of articles brings together insights from lexical semantics, corpus linguistics, computational lexicography, machine learning, and psychology to address three main questions: To what degree is it possible to apply semantic frames derived from the English lexicon to the description and analysis of other languages? What types of resources are necessary for the creation of FrameNets for French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, and Spanish? How can the creation of multi-lingual FrameNets be automated? The contents exemplifies the liveliness of current research on cross-lingual applications of Frame Semantics to natural language processing.

Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 860

Book Description
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 5th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2004, held in Bath, UK in September 2004. The 80 revised papers presented together with an introduction were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on ad hoc text retrieval tracks (mainly cross-language experiments and monolingual experiments), domain-specific document retrieval, interactive cross-language information retrieval, multiple language question answering, cross-language retrieval in image collections, cross-language spoken document retrieval, and on issues in CLIR and in evaluation.

Lexis in Contrast

Lexis in Contrast PDF Author: Bengt Altenberg
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9781588110909
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
This volume takes stock of current research in contrastive lexical studies. It reflects the growing interest in corpus-based approaches to the study of lexis, in particular the use of multilingual corpora, shared by researchers working in widely differing fields - contrastive linguistics, lexicology, lexicography, terminology, computational linguistics and machine translation. The articles in the volume, which cover a wide diversity of languages, are divided into four main sections: the exploration of cross-linguistic equivalence, contrastive lexical semantics, corpus-based multilingual lexicography, and translation and parallel concordancing. The volume also contains a lengthy introduction to recent trends in contrastive lexical studies written by the editors of the volume, Bengt Altenberg and Sylviane Granger.

Terminological Ontologies

Terminological Ontologies PDF Author: Javier Lacasta
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441969810
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 213

Book Description
Information infrastructures are integrated solutions based on the fusion of information and communication technologies. They are characterized by the large amount of data that must be managed accordingly. An information infrastructure requires an efficient and effective information retrieval system to provide access to the items stored in the infrastructure. Terminological Ontologies: Design, Management and Practical Applications presents the main problems that affect the discovery systems of information infrastructures to manage terminological models, and introduces a combination of research tools and applications in Semantic Web technologies. This book specifically analyzes the need to create, relate, and integrate the models required for an infrastructure by elaborating on the problem of accessing these models in an efficient manner via interoperable services and components. Terminological Ontologies: Design, Management and Practical Applications is geared toward information management systems and semantic web professionals working as project managers, application developers, government workers and more. Advanced undergraduate and graduate level students, professors and researchers focusing on computer science will also find this book valuable as a secondary text or reference book.
