Progress in Nitrogen Cycling Studies
Author: O. van Cleemput
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401154503
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 666
Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of the `8th Nitrogen Workshop' which was held at the University of Ghent, Belgium, from 5 to 8 September 1994. Although nitrogen dynamics in different ecosystems have been studied for several decades, new orientations and other emphases have recently emerged. Previously, nitrogen was considered as an essential element mostly in terms of productivity, but now, more emphasis is attached to environmental consequences. More than 100 contributions in this book tackle recent developments within the fields of nitrogen advice systems, plant response to fertilization, immobilization and mobilization, nitrification, denitrification, leaching, ammonia volatilization and biological nitrogen fixation. A large number of papers is devoted to the formation of gaseous nitrogen compounds, while mineralization-immobilization is another topic of important interest. The book also contains the reports of discussion groups on different aspects of the nitrogen cycle.

Spatial Variability of Water Related Soil Physical Properties
Author: Mardonio Aguiar Coelho
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Soil moisture
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
A study of soil variabitiy. From 36 sites selected by an unbalanced three-stage nested design, 180 core samples were collected at 30cm depth intervals to 150cm. In addition, 500 bulk samples were taken at the 60cm depth on an equally spaced grid over a secondary sampling area of 96m by 76m. The measured parameters showed different patterns of spatial variation. Values of 15-bar moisture retention corresponding to the 500 bulk samples showed a frequency distribution close to the normal with a slight tendency toward skewness. Close relationships were found between bulk density and per cent sand and silt. A highly significant correlation (significant at the 0.01 level) between 15-bar water retention and clay content existed. Particle size distribution exhibited a decrease of silt and clay and a correponding increase of sand with depth. Comparison between the sampling scheme used and three-stage balanced designs revealed that at least two alternatives would be more effective in decreasing the variance of the mean, but they do not provide any degrees of freedom for the third stage. An apparent compromise was found to exist between the scheme used and the optimum unbalanced designs selected for efficient estimation of variance components for the majority of the measured parameters.

Encyclopedia of Agrophysics
Author: Jan Gliński
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048135842
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1075
Book Description
This Encyclopedia of Agrophysics will provide up-to-date information on the physical properties and processes affecting the quality of the environment and plant production. It will be a "first-up" volume which will nicely complement the recently published Encyclopedia of Soil Science, (November 2007) which was published in the same series. In a single authoritative volume a collection of about 250 informative articles and ca 400 glossary terms covering all aspects of agrophysics will be presented. The authors will be renowned specialists in various aspects in agrophysics from a wide variety of countries. Agrophysics is important both for research and practical use not only in agriculture, but also in areas like environmental science, land reclamation, food processing etc. Agrophysics is a relatively new interdisciplinary field closely related to Agrochemistry, Agrobiology, Agroclimatology and Agroecology. Nowadays it has been fully accepted as an agricultural and environmental discipline. As such this Encyclopedia volume will be an indispensable working tool for scientists and practitioners from different disciplines, like agriculture, soil science, geosciences, environmental science, geography, and engineering.
