Book Description
Most mine detection sensors are affected by soil properties such as water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, and dielectric constant The most important of these is water content since it directly influences the three other properties The variability of these properties may be such that either potential land mine signatures are overshadowed or false alarms result In this paper we present the results of field measurements in the Netherlands, Panama, and New Mexico on spatial variability of soil water content We also discuss how the variability of soil water content affects the soils electrical conductivity and dielectric constant and the resulting response of a ground penetrating radar system.

Characterization of Soil Spatial Variability for Site-Specific Management Using Soil Electrical Conductivity and Other Remotely Sensed Data

Characterization of Soil Spatial Variability for Site-Specific Management Using Soil Electrical Conductivity and Other Remotely Sensed Data PDF Author:

Book Description
Field-scale characterization of soil spatial variability using remote sensing technology has a great potential for achieving the successful implementation of site-specific management (SSM). The objectives of this study were to: (i) examine the spatial relationships between apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) and soil chemical and physical properties to determine if ECa could be useful to characterize soil properties related to crop productivity in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont of North Carolina; (ii) evaluate the effects of in-situ soil moisture variation on ECa mapping as a basis for characterization of soil spatial variability and as a data layer in cluster analysis as a means of delineating sampling zones; (iii) evaluate clustering approaches using different variable sets for management zone delineation to characterize spatial variability in soil nutrient levels and crop yields. Field studies were conducted in two physiographic regions of North Carolina, the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Spatial measurements of ECa via electromagnetic induction (EMI) were compared with soil chemical parameters (extractable P, K, and micronutrients; pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), humic matter or soil organic matter; and physical parameters (percentage sand, silt, and clay; and plant-available water (PAW) content; bulk density; cone index; saturated hydraulic conductivity [Ksat] in one of the coastal plain fields) using correlation analysis across fields. We also collected ECa measurements in one coastal plain study field on four days with significantly different naturally occurring soil moisture conditions measured in five increments to 0.75 m using profiling time-domain reflectometry probes to evaluate the temporal variability of ECa associated with changes in in situ soil moisture content. Nonhierarchical k-means cluster analysis using sensor-based field attributes including vertical ECa, near-infrared (NIR) radiance of bare-soil from an aerial color infrared (CIR) i.

Principles and Applications of Time Domain Electrometry in Geoenvironmental Engineering

Principles and Applications of Time Domain Electrometry in Geoenvironmental Engineering PDF Author: A.M.O. Mohamed
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780415411295
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 636

Book Description
Time domain electrometry (TDE) is a general term which includes time domain reflectrometry and time domain transmissiometry. It is a commercially-viable technique for leak detection, contaminant monitoring, and moisture content determination in contaminant transport modelling. Under demographic pressure, contaminated sites are increasingly being re-developed for domestic and industrial use; and this presents an urgent need for reliable, non-intrusive and integrated methods of subsurface characterization, detection and monitoring of organic and inorganic pollutants, soil moisture content and salinity. This book provides an overview of the potential application of TDE in geoenvironmental engineering and describes the geophysical methods used.

Languages : en
Pages : 2131

Book Description
Water quality and management are of great significance globally, as the demand for clean, potable water far exceeds the availability. Water science research brings together the natural and applied sciences, engineering, chemistry, law and policy, and economics, and the Treatise on Water Science seeks to unite these areas through contributions from a global team of author-experts. The 4-volume set examines topics in depth, with an emphasis on innovative research and technologies for those working in applied areas. Published in partnership with and endorsed by the International Water Association (IWA), demonstrating the authority of the content Editor-in-Chief Peter Wilderer, a Stockholm Water Prize recipient, has assembled a world-class team of volume editors and contributing authors Topics related to water resource management, water quality and supply, and handling of wastewater are treated in depth
