Die Entlehnungen sind chronologisch nach Jahrhunderten und Themengebieten wie Bergbau, Viehwirtschaft und Kultur der Cowboys sortiert und anhand zahlreicher Beispiele veranschaulicht. Dabei wird auch auf die etymologische und morphologische Entwicklungen eingegangen. The borrowings will be dealt with in a fairly chronological order and, as far as possible, summed up in semantic fields. In Chapter 2 I will present the borrowings before the nineteenth century. Chapter 3 deals with loanwords in the nineteenth century, the most productive century of Spanish loanwords in American English. Many terms are adopted in the field of the ranching and cowboy culture in the entire Southwest and the mining industry in Northern California which is why subchapter 3.1 is dedicated to borrowings in the mining culture and 3.2 to those in the cattle-raising culture. In 3.3 I will treat nineteenth- century loanwords from other semantic fields. Chapter 4 is about the borrowings from the twentieth century which are a result of the Mexican-American War and particularly of the big immigration wave from Latin America into the US. In the conclusion I will first sum up some typical phonological and morphological features in the treatment of Spanish loanwords in American English. Then I will give a short concluding overview of the periods and semantic fields of the influx of Spanish loanwords into American English.

One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. While there are numerous investigations of the impact English has exerted on Spanish, the reverse language contact scenario has received comparatively little attention. This book sheds light on the Spanish influence on the English vocabulary since 1801, offering the first systematic analysis of the multitude of words which have been taken over from Spanish and its national varieties over the past few centuries. The results provided by this study rely on the evaluation of a comprehensive lexicographical sample of 1355 Spanish borrowings collected from the Oxford English Dictionary Online. The focus of linguistic concern here is on the chronological distribution of the various Spanish-derived words, their contextual usage, stylistic function and sense development from their earliest attested use in English until today. The present-day use of the borrowings is illustrated with documentary evidence retrieved from a variety of English language corpora.
