Alone in an ancient spaceship without communication or flight controls, Julianna is headed for Noreusa, an unexplored planet her ship is programmed to conquer and exploit. Separated from all she loves, Captain Spacehart leaves behind her long time partner, Pharthy, her close friend Sahma, and two adult sonsas well as memories of her deceased half-alien daughter, born in prison when she was barely eighteen. Impetuous and passionate, with a weakness for aliens, Spacehart is determined to foil her mission and return to Earth. Political Discourse in Emergent, Fragile, and Failed Democracies

Political Discourse in Emergent, Fragile, and Failed Democracies PDF Author: Orwenjo, Daniel Ochieng
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1522500820
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 437

Book Description
Any system of government is comprised of several dimensions of functionality, which must all work in congruence. When any part of the system is dysfunctional, the government’s stability becomes fractured and societal problems can arise. Political Discourse in Emergent, Fragile, and Failed Democracies examines the effects of unstable democratic systems of government in modern society, providing an imperative analysis on political communications from such nations. Highlighting real-world examples on the constraints seen in malfunctioning or emerging governments, this book is a pivotal reference source for policy makers, researchers, academicians, and upper-level students interested in politics and governance.

An Obituary for "Wisdom Literature"

An Obituary for Author: Will Kynes
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191083194
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
An Obituary for "Wisdom Literature" considers the definitional issues long plaguing Wisdom scholarship. Will Kynes argues that Wisdom Literature is not a category used in early Jewish and Christian interpretation. It first emerged in modern scholarship, shaped by its birthplace in nineteenth-century Germany. Kynes casts new light on the traits long associated with the category, such as universalism, humanism, rationalism, empiricism, and secularism, which so closely reflect the ideals of that time. Since it was originally assembled to reflect modern ideals, it is not surprising that biblical scholars have faced serious difficulties defining the corpus on another basis or integrating it into the theology of the Old Testament. The problem, however, is not only why the texts were perceived in this one way, but that they are perceived in only one way at all. The book builds on recent theories from literary studies and cognitive science to create a new alternative approach to genre that integrates hermeneutical insight from various genre proposals. This theory is then applied to Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs, mapping out the complex textual network contributing to their meaning. With the death of the Wisdom Literature category, both the so-called Wisdom texts and the concept of wisdom find new life.

Cognitive Linguistic Approaches to Text and Discourse

Cognitive Linguistic Approaches to Text and Discourse PDF Author: Christopher Hart
Publisher: Edinburgh University Press
ISBN: 1474450008
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Drawing on range of text genres including novels, poems, health forums, holiday guestbooks, prayers, political songs and news stories, each chapter uses cognitive linguistics to shed light on the meanings and meaning-making processes invoked when we encounter texts belonging to different literary and political genres. The book presents new insights into the workings of textual phenomena such as metaphor, viewpoint and deixis and also sheds light on more elusive, epiphenomenal qualities such as a text's ambience, atmosphere, power, ideology or persuasiveness. It also takes new strides in cognitive text analysis by exploiting experimental and ethnographic methods to empirically investigate readers' reception of, and resistance to, texts.
