The Furniture of John Shearer, 1790-1820

The Furniture of John Shearer, 1790-1820 PDF Author: Elizabeth A. Davison
Publisher: Rowman Altamira
ISBN: 0759119562
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This book is a full-color catalogue raisonne interprets the distinctive furniture made by John Shearer, one of the most accomplished and intriguing furniture makers during the post-Revolutionary period. Shearer emigrated from Scotland in the late 18th century and retained loyalist sympathies throughout his life, evidenced by the imagery and inscriptions sympathetic to various British causes_such as the suppression of the Irish rebellion in 1798 and the British victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805_that he worked into his furniture. Davison provides insight into the furniture's appeal to Anglo-American patrons, not secret loyalists, but men still culturally tied to Great Britain. Shearer's pieces are scattered among various collections, and many of them have been identified only in the last 25 years. This catalog is the only work in which all of Shearer's known pieces of furniture are presented in a single volume.

Furniture in the Southern Style

Furniture in the Southern Style PDF Author: Robert W. Lang
Publisher: Popular Woodworking Books
ISBN: 9781440319228
Category : House & Home
Languages : en
Pages : 160

Book Description
Historic forms of simple furniture have long been popular with amateur woodworkers, collectors and those seeking to better understand our past. But furniture from the Southern United States has largely been ignored, and Furniture in the Southern Style fills that gap. Furniture in the Southern Style documents proportions and details of this important and distinctive style through measured drawings of original pieces in the MESDA collection, and information in the Object and Craftsman databases at MESDA. The focus of Furniture in the Southern Style are the less formal pieces, largely unknown to those outside of the area where they are produced. The pieces you will see are great demonstrations of the style, each appropriately documented with information and photographs. The heart of this book are the measured construction drawings, allowing you to better understand and reproduce these pieces. Also included are chapters covering the historic context of the furniture, the craftsmen behind the pieces, and the techniques they used.

Neat Pieces

Neat Pieces PDF Author:
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 9780820328058
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Neat Pieces is a detailed, extensively illustrated survey of the major forms and makers of the "plain style" of furniture made and used by Georgians in the 1800s. Simply designed, solidly constructed of local woods, and usually unadorned, such pieces were used daily by their owners for storage, sleeping, eating, and more. Today, this furniture is read by historians, folklorists, and other experts for clues into a past way of life. It is also prized by museums, antiques dealers and auction houses, and furniture appraisers, collectors, and makers. Neat Pieces first appeared as the companion volume to the Atlanta History Center's seminal 1983 exhibit of the same name. The exhibit featured 126 exemplary pieces of furniture, including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands. Each of them is described and illustrated in this book. Photographs in the original edition of Neat Pieces were black-and-white; here they are color. A new foreword by Deanne Levison looks at related publications and exhibits of the subsequent two decades. The introduction, by William W. Griffin, provides information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes. Also included in the book is a list of more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen, with key details of their lives and work. 126 exemplary pieces of furniture (including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands) 172 color photographs, 17 black-and-white photographs Information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes Details about more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen
