The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms

The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms PDF Author: Aaron Karp
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317999304
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
Although it receives much less attention than better known disarmament processes, the destruction of small arms is reshaping the military arsenals of the world. Out of roughly 200 modern military small arms world-wide, about 500,000 are destroyed every year. The commitment of major governments and international organizations makes small arms destruction is a permanent addition to the global disarmament repertoire. But the prospects for greater military small arms disarmament may be declining, as war in Afghanistan and Iraq create unprecedented demand for second-hand weaponry. Inconspicuous disarmament of small arms and ammunition is reshaping the global picture of firearms, light weapons and ammunition. The process is far from comprehensive, but much more than cosmetic. Small arms destruction is here to stay, but its contributions may be fleeting. This book is the first full-length examination of the issue. The case studies in this volume examine the politics of military small arms disarmament. When, they ask, is surplus destruction most likely? And what can be done to make destruction more likely and more effective? Case studies examine small arms destruction by NATO and the OSCE, and in Bulgaria, Cambodia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and others. This book was published as a special issue of Contemporary Security Policy.

Postinternationalism and Small Arms Control

Postinternationalism and Small Arms Control PDF Author: Damien Rogers
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317077288
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
Even though impacts generated by the widespread availability and ongoing use of small arms and light weapons have not reached a magnitude sufficient to radically reorder contemporary world affairs, awareness of the nature and extent of these impacts has compelled some international actors to take decisive action. Damien Rogers examines how the international community has responded to the challenge of controlling small arms and light weapons since the early 1990s. Using a postinternationalist analytic framework, he specifically focuses on the maturing relationships between particular actors of world affairs and the nascent interconnectivity between their strategies for, and approaches toward, controlling these weapons. Furthermore, the book identifies ways in which the captains of small arms industry, arms brokers and chief users of these weapons are able to mitigate, resist or elude the intended effects of those responses.

Small Arms Survey 2015

Small Arms Survey 2015 PDF Author: Small Arms Survey
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316442446
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
The Small Arms Survey 2015 examines the role of weapons and armed violence in humanity's appropriation of the earth's wildlife and mineral riches - in Africa, where the poaching of elephants and rhinos is becoming increasingly militarised, and near resource extraction sites around the world. In addition to presenting updates on the UN small arms process and the top arms importers and exporters, the volume assesses how recent technological developments affect weapons marking, record-keeping, and tracing; reviews small arms flows to Egypt, Libya, and Syria; and evaluates a stockpile management initiative in south-east Europe. The 'armed actors' section sheds light on the arms and ammunition used by insurgents in northern Mali, the decline of the Forces Démocratiques de Libération du Rwanda, and the use of floating armouries by private security companies in the Indian Ocean. This edition also analyses conditions that are driving young people to adopt high-risk coping strategies in Burundi.

Arms Sales, Treaties, and Violations

Arms Sales, Treaties, and Violations PDF Author: Rita Santos
Publisher: Greenhaven Publishing LLC
ISBN: 1534503501
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
The international weapons trade is a vast and lucrative machine, estimated at generating 70 billion dollars annually. In 2014, The Arms Trade Treaty, which regulates the international trade in conventional arms, was entered into force. But compliance is complicated, and even the most powerful nations have violated the treaty. Irresponsible arms transfers and ready availability can destabilize security and cause a host of problems among civilian populations in a region. The viewpoints in this resource examine the responsibility of nation states around the world to take accountability for their participation in weaponizing.
