Songs in Dark Times

Songs in Dark Times PDF Author: Amelia M. Glaser
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674248457
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
A probing reading of leftist Jewish poets who, during the interwar period, drew on the trauma of pogroms to depict the suffering of other marginalized peoples. Between the world wars, a generation of Jewish leftist poets reached out to other embattled peoples of the earth—Palestinian Arabs, African Americans, Spanish Republicans—in Yiddish verse. Songs in Dark Times examines the richly layered meanings of this project, grounded in Jewish collective trauma but embracing a global community of the oppressed. The long 1930s, Amelia M. Glaser proposes, gave rise to a genre of internationalist modernism in which tropes of national collective memory were rewritten as the shared experiences of many national groups. The utopian Jews of Songs in Dark Times effectively globalized the pogroms in a bold and sometimes fraught literary move that asserted continuity with anti-Arab violence and black lynching. As communists and fellow travelers, the writers also sought to integrate particular experiences of suffering into a borderless narrative of class struggle. Glaser resurrects their poems from the pages of forgotten Yiddish communist periodicals, particularly the New York–based Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the Soviet literary journal Royte Velt (Red World). Alongside compelling analysis, Glaser includes her own translations of ten poems previously unavailable in English, including Malka Lee’s “God’s Black Lamb,” Moyshe Nadir’s “Closer,” and Esther Shumiatsher’s “At the Border of China.” These poets dreamed of a moment when “we” could mean “we workers” rather than “we Jews.” Songs in Dark Times takes on the beauty and difficulty of that dream, in the minds of Yiddish writers who sought to heal the world by translating pain.

Love in All Ages

Love in All Ages PDF Author: Lois Willoughby
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780483723757
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
Excerpt from Love in All Ages: Songs and Fragments of Days Old and New The old Persians have given us beautiful lyrics, redolent of the perfume of roses and violets, and though shrouded in mysticism, they breathe the warmth of the far East. The early English poets gave the subject much attention and their lines are full of charm and a certain pleasing recklessness. The Eighteenth Century brought us poems of sincerity and much dignity. Truly, these verses belong to the age of the stately gavotte. Modern poets, the poets of to-day, are writ ing our own love songs telling the old, sweet story in accents we understand. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of History and Hope Their crews have passed to calms with tattered shrouds, And trust disaster may not soon befall. Here o'er this waste of earth's eventful years Our fathers, and ourselves have hither come Battled by storms, and driven from reaching home, Though we have looked that way so oft through tears The past returns to present strife meanwhile, With long lost pleasures of our sunny days When faces touched each other through a smile, And hearts were thrilled with love in dear old ways. Play-grounds grow green again in memory's view Paths flash to sight, well worn by flying feet, And playmates come we cannot really meet With rocks, and brooks, and trees that once we knew. Our little days of time, we own how strange How strange the different years we reckon o'er Some dark as night, with slow, or sudden change When shadows crossed the threshold of the door. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of Three Centuries My great effort has been to make a thoroughly readable book. With this in view I have not given tedious extracts from dull plays and weary epics, but have gathered up the best of the old ballads and short, time approved poems, and drawn largely from contemporary writers and the waifs and estrays of unknown authors. I have also, as a specialty of the work, made a careful selection of the best hymns in our language. I am prepared to find my method open to criticism from some quarters, but I have catered not so much for the scholarly few as for the great mass of readers to whose snatched leisure my brief lyrical selections would seem to have a special adaptation. Heart Songs

Heart Songs PDF Author: Henry Weston Frost

Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
Excerpt from Heart Songs: Verses for Christians Long years ago, one day in sunlit May, There burst forth from my heart a spring-time song; I knew not whence it came, but I dared pray That God would take my words, nor deem them wrong; For all was fair that day, below, above, And I had sung my song in praiseful love. The years have passed, and I have oft-times sung, In other springs, and through long winters too, When joys were full, and e'en when tears were wrung From heart and eyes because life's joys were few; What could I do but sing since Christ was mine? Love must praise such as He, through cloud and shine. Some frowned displeasure some more kindly smiled But thought them folly - these my humble lays; This too I deem them, though they were beguiled By love that could not still its tuneful praise: And - since I love - With spirit bowed and awed, I lay my folly 'at the feet of God!
