Book Description
After spending ten years in the army, James Wharton enters civilian life and settles in the idyllic English countryside with his husband and two dogs, in what seems to be a perfect fairy-tale ending. But only a year later, separated from his husband, James finds himself trying to carve out a new life in London, frequenting the capital's gay clubbing scene in a search for potential friends and lovers. He is quick to discover the phenomenon known as 'chemsex' - a weekend world of drugs, partying and sex. Immediately hooked, James begins to spend hours, often days, with groups of total strangers, locked in drug-induced states of heightened sexual desire. Something for the Weekend compassionately explores the growing popularity of chemsex and considers the motivating factors that have lured people into this underworld. James interviews a variety of characters, from drug dealers and sexual health experts to other gay men who, like himself, became addicted to this often volatile culture, and reveals how chemsex has cemented its status as more than just a short-term craze, becoming a permanent feature in modern gay life.

Something for the Weekend PDF Author: Terry Wogan
Publisher: Orion
ISBN: 1409148815
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
A collection of Terry Wogan's best TELEGRAPH columns, with his trademark wry take on life. 'It's my feeling that whatever's bothering you, you ought to be able to say it in less than 500 words. The rest is window-dressing ... Probably explains why I didn't write WAR AND PEACE...' Sir Terry Wogan has been busy over the past 10 years writing his ever-popular SUNDAY TELEGRAPH column. In this first collection of the very best of his weekly musings, Terry delivers his distinctively dry and amusing views on life. From the disappointment of the declining years, the ubiquity of TV cooks ('Nowadays, you can't throw a stone in a country road without hitting a television chef, in full colour'), to vanity and those little daily annoyances that drive you to drink, he never fails to entertain. Terry's modern grumbles, gentle social commentary and witty observations make for a delightful assortment of reading. Charming and wry, with not a hint of lickspittle, this is WOGAN'S WORLD at its most entertaining.

#1 International Bestseller Shortlisted for the 2020 Australian Prime Minister's Literary Award * Shortlisted for the Stella Prize 2020 * Longlisted for the 2020 Miles Franklin Award “The Big Chill with a dash of Big Little Lies . . . Knife-sharp and deeply alive.” —The Guardian (London) “An insightful, poignant, and fiercely honest novel about female friendship and female aging.” —Sigrid Nunez, National Book Award–winning author of The Friend “Friendship, ambition, love, sexual politics and death: it’s all here in one sharp, funny, heartbreaking, and gorgeously written package. I loved it.” —Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train Three women in their seventies reunite for one last, life-changing weekend in the beach house of their late friend. Four older women have a lifelong friendship of the best kind: loving, practical, frank, and steadfast. But when Sylvie dies, the ground shifts dangerously for the remaining three. They are Jude, a once-famous restaurateur; Wendy, an acclaimed public intellectual; and Adele, a renowned actress now mostly out of work. Struggling to recall exactly why they’ve remained close all these years, the grieving women gather at Sylvie’s old beach house—not for festivities this time, but to clean it out before it is sold. Can they survive together without her? Without Sylvie to maintain the group’s delicate equilibrium, frustrations build and painful memories press in. Fraying tempers, an elderly dog, unwelcome guests, and too much wine collide in a storm that brings long-buried hurts to the surface—and threatens to sweep away their friendship for good. The Weekend explores growing old and growing up, and what happens when we’re forced to uncover the lies we tell ourselves. Sharply observed and excruciatingly funny, this is a jewel of a book: a celebration of tenderness and friendship from an award-winning writer.

On the weekend, I looked for a new book. I always read the description first because, you know, I won't read just any old thing. So I read the description for this book and thought it looked okay, so then I read the online sample and laughed so hard that a little bit of pee came out. Okay, a lot of pee came out. ALRIGHT! I PEED SO MUCH I HAD TO CHANGE MY PANTS! There, are you happy now? It's funny, okay? And it isn't all about vomit and farts either (okay, a lot of it is about vomit and farts, but what's wrong with that?) *Every Monday at school, Reggie writes an essay that begins with "On the weekend..." WARNING: You might want to have a spare pair of undies handy while you read about Reggie's weekends.*

The British Pop Dandy

The British Pop Dandy PDF Author: Stan Hawkins
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351545868
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 245

Book Description
Who are pop dandies? Why are stars like David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty and Robbie Williams so dandified? Taking up a wide range of British pop stars, Hawkins seeks to find out why so many have cast themselves in roles that often take style to absurd extremes. In this study, male pop artists are mapped against a cultural and historical background through a genealogy of personalities, such as Oscar Wilde, W.H. Auden, Andy Warhol, No Coward, Derek Jarmen, David Beckham and countless others. A critical analysis of issues and approaches to musical performance through masculinity becomes the focal point of this fascinating study. Ranging from the sixties to beyond the twentieth century, The British Pop Dandy considers the construction of the male pop icon through the spectacle of videos, live concerts and films. Why do we derive pleasure from the performing body, and how is entertainment linked to categories of gender and sexuality? The author insists that pop performances can be understood through human characteristics that relate to the particulars of dandyism, camp and glamour, and this he theorizes through the work of Charles Baudelaire. One of the political objectives of the dandy is to liberate himself through a denial of the structures that assume fixed identity. Not least, it is acts of queering in pop music that characterize entire generations of male artists in the UK. Setting out to discover what distinguishes the British pop dandy, Hawkins considers the role of music and performance in the articulation of hyperbolic display. It is argued that the recorded voice is a construction that idealizes self-representation, and absorbs the listener's attention. Particularly, camp address in singing practice is taken up in conjunction with a discussion of intimacy, which forms part of the strategy of the performer. In a range of songs and videos selected for music analysis, Hawkins points to the uniqueness of the voice as it expresses a transgressive quali
