Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The following chapters were first prepared for the college lecture room, and, although since rewritten, they doubtless still betray by a certain dull, didactic manner the place of their origin. While directing the work of college classes, I had often looked about for a book that should give a compendious statement of the essentials of literature and the grounds of critical estimate. Finding no such book, I essayed to make one. Two or three books on the subject - born, I judge, of the same want that produced this one - have indeed appeared since these lectures were first written; but their purpose and method are quite different from those I have had in mind. I have attempted neither to expound a philosophy of criticism nor to elaborate a critical method; but simply to state, as plainly as I might, some qualities that by common consent are to be found in all writing deserving to be called literature, and to lay down some fundamental principles that must be assumed in all sound critical judgments. And Mark agree against Luke in the placing of two sections in which the narrative is evidently threefold: The true kindred of Christ, recorded in Mark 3 31 - 35 and Matt. - 50 immediately preceding the parables by the sea (mark - 34; Matt. In Luke follows these parables; the imprisonment of John the Baptist, recorded in Mark 18 and Matt. 4 in connection with the results of the missionary journey of the Twelve, is given by Luke at the close of his account of the preaching of John, Luke 20. In the arrangement of paragraphs within a section Matt. And Mark agree against Luke in the account of the last supper and in the narrative of the trial. Besides these instances there are three in which Luke, though recording an event similar to that of Mark and Matt., evidently gives a wholly independent account unrelated in a literary way; and one in which Luke's account is, in the main at least, independent of Mark, and Matt. Is partly parallel to Mark, partly to Luke. These passages - Luke - 30; - 11; - 50 and - 32 - do not concern us at this point. Mark and Luke agree against Matt. In the location of thirteen sections, which lie between Matt. And Within these limits there are certain groups of two or three sections the sections of which succeed one another in the same order as in Mark and Luke, but the groups themselves are differently located. In respect to the narratives which precede and follow these limits, Matt. Agrees with Mark in the order of sections except in the transposition of the conversation between Jesus and his disciples con cerning the withered fig tree to a place in immediate connection with the cursing of the tree. But as Luke omits both of these sections, the transposition does not result in a disagreement of Matt. With both Mark and Luke. Matt. In order to accept or reject the dogma of rewards and punish ments in literature, one must carefully consider whether or not it is the aim and end of art to instruct. It was not necessary, however, that the writer should ofier any very specific and final answer to this large question. The doctrine of poetic justice has been understood in different ways by literary critics, and has been applied so rigorously by some writers, that the rejection of the doctrine does not necessarily imply a denial that instruction should be the chief aim of literary art. This much may be said as pointing towards an answer: on the one hand the gross violation of the principle of poetic justice, as ordinarily understood, is highly inartistic in its effect; and, on the other hand, absolute conformity to extreme form of poetic justice works against the best interests of art.
