The minor alkaloids of Lycopodium annotinum L. have been investigated by elution chromatography. The spectroscopic and chemical evidence which lead to the determination of the constitution and stereochemistry of the dinitrogeneous Lycopodium alkaloids, o(-obscurine,^ -obscurine, and lycodine is presented. The constitution and stereochemistry of the Lycopodium alkaloid L-8, which we named lycodoline, has been determined. The characterization of a previously unreported alkaloid of Lycopodium annotinum L. which we have named annopodine is described. A biosynthetic scheme for the Lycopodium alkaloids utilizing lysine and isopentenyl pyrophosphate is presented.

In the first part of this thesis the investigation of the alkaloids of L. alopecuroides L. is described. A total of ten alkaloids (2a, 3, 14a, 25, 39, 71, 78a, 80, 87a, and 89a) were isolated and characterized. These included lycopodine (2a), clavolonine (3), and lycodoline (14a). The structures of these three alkaloids have been previously determined. Anhydrolyco- doline (25) was also isolated. The natural occurence of anhydro- lycodoline had not been noted previously. The structure of alolycopine (78a) was established by physical and chemical methods. Structures are proposed for fawcettidine (3 9), alopecur- idine (71) and fawcettimine (38). The latter alkaloid is found in L. fawce ttii. These structural assignments are based on chemical correlations and other data. The complete structures of fawcettidine (39) and fawcettimine (38) are now known. The position of the hydroxyl group in alopecuridine (71) is tentatively assigned to C-4. The structure of debenzoylalopecurine (87a) was established by X-ray analysis. This enabled the structures of alopecurine (80) and acetyldebenzoylalopecurine (89) to be elucidated by chemical and physical methods. In the second part of this thesis the investigation of the strong bases of L. Lucidulum Michx. is described. A total of seven alkaloids (2 a, 14a, 5, 91, 18, 98a and 119 a) were isolated and characterized. These included lycopodine (2a), lycodoline (14a), lycodine (5), flabelliformine (91) and alkaloid L.20 (18) of known structure.The structures of alkaloid L.23 (98a) and lucidioline (119a) were elucidated using chemical and physical methods.
